Spanish PV developer Solarpack has inaugurated a 25MW project in Chile that will provide power for a mining company.
The Pozo Almonte power plant was opened by the country’s minister of energy Máximo Pacheco along with a number of local officials and Solarpack CEO Pablo Burgos.

“The start of operations at Pozo Almonte is another important milestone for Solarpack and the development of the photovoltaic solar energy in Chile. It represents the consolidation of our business in this country and the materialisation of Solarpack’s bet for Chile [at] the end of 2008,” said Burgos.
The development of PV in Chile has been a slow process with the country’s multi-gigawatt pipeline only recently delivering multiple large-scale projects.
Pozo Almonte will provide 13% of the electricity needs of the Doña Inés de Collahuasi mining company. It is the first project of its size to connect to Chile’s Northern Interconnected System (SING) according to Solarpack.
It is the company’s second project in Chile and its fourth in South America.
It is developing a 19MW project in Peru which is currently under construction.
