Members of South Marston community recently gathered to open Sevor Farm Solar, a 10MW solar farm completed by Eneco UK.
The project will provide electricity generated from the site directly to the local Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) site. The solar-generated electricity is expected to account for around 64% of the engine manufacturing plant’s annual consumption.
Eneco claims that it has worked hard to engage with the local community, committing funds to help support a new speed reduction zone in South Marston Village and improving local footpaths.
The solar company enlisted the help of pupils from South Marston C of E School to help design a logo for the solar farm project, with Pheobe Young’s winning entry displayed on the site’s new sign. On the launch day pupils from the school sowed wildflower seeds across the site.
Commenting on the opening of the project, Guy Madgwick, director of Eneco UK said: “Today’s event has been really symbolic of the achievement that is Sevor Farm Solar. While we are proud of the build of the project, its output and significance to Eneco as our largest onshore solar project, we are most of all extremely appreciative of the cooperation and warm welcome given to us from the local community.
“Sevor Farm Solar also represents localised self-supply of a large manufacturing business – something that is central to Eneco’s decentralised and sustainable energy strategy.”
The 17-hectare site was completed in April 2014 after a four month construction period.
