Kingspan Energy has completed a 5.8MW solar array on the roof of an unnamed multinational car company’s new facility in the midlands.
Kingspan claims that the PV system is the largest rooftop solar project in the UK, capable of generating 5.5MWh annually – enough to power 1,500 homes.
The array sits across 3.5 hectares of roofspace and uses Chinese solar manufacturer Yingli’s PANDA series modules. Yingli has confirmed that it shipped 10MW of its modules to Kingpan in the first quarter of 2014.
Speaking to Solar Power Portal, a Kingspan spokesperson confirmed that the 10MW module shipment will be used to complete a number of large-scale rooftop projects across the UK this year in addition to the 5.8MW array that was completed in the first quarter of this year.
Peter Turley, business unit manager at Kingspan Energy predicted that the company will continue to develop rooftop projects in the UK. He said: “By leveraging our expertise in the construction industry and Yingli Solar's superior performance modules, we believe we have a robust roadmap to deliver high efficiency, low cost and low carbon building solutions across a broad range of market sectors.”
Ramin Dilmaghanian, business development director UK for Yingli echoed Turley’s thoughts. He said: “The UK has seen unprecedented growth in this last quarter with hundreds of megawatts of PV –being deployed ahead of the Q2 ROC adjustment. We believe that demand for large-scale rooftop projects with a self-consumption model will, in the coming months, continue to provide a stable backbone for the UK market.”
