Solar Thermal is it suitable for my home?

To understand if solar thermal is right for your home you need to look at a few considerations.

  • You typically need around 5 square metres of roof space. Ideally South facing and one that is not overshadowed by trees or buildings so that it receives sunlight for most of the day.

  • Ideally you should have a roof pitch of around 30 degrees, but a frame can be used for flat roofs to provide the correct elevation.

  • You need space for a larger or extra hot water cylinder.  If you are planning a refurbishment then this is the ideal time to include space for the cylinder

  • Is your boiler compatible with solar thermal? Most traditional boilers that work with separate storage tanks are, however modern combination boilers (combis) that work without separate tanks may not be suitable
  • Do you need planning permission? In the England most solar water heating systems don't need planning permission, but it is always best to consult your local planning office if you live in a Listed Building, or a building in Conservation Area or World Heritage Site. If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you will need to consult your local authority.

A competent accredited installer will be able to assess your home and help you choose the best set-up to meet your needs
