Solar thermal Costs and Savings

  • The cost for a typical solar water heating system is around £4,800 (Inc. VAT at 5%).
  • Savings are moderate - a solar water heating system can reduce your water heating bill by between £50 and £85 per year. It will also save up to 570kg of CO2 emissions, depending on what fuel you will be replacing. (data sourced from energy savings trust)
  • Maintenance costs are very low. Most solar water heating systems come with a 5-10 year warranty and require little maintenance. You should take a look at your panels every year and have them checked more thoroughly by an accredited installer every 3-5 years, or as specified by your installer
  • The proposed RHI  Renewable Heat Incentive -  which is  a financial benefit like the Feed in Tariff for solar PV , has been delayed to October 2012.  Broadly it will include £300 contribution for all domestic installations.  The commercial RHI will take effect from July 2011, it includes a tariff for systems up to 200kW, of £0.085 per kWh.  heat metering is a requirement for this.

The RHI is designed to provide financial support to encourage the uptake of renewable and low carbon heat technologies like heat pumps.

Please note that a requirement for all  benefits for both solar electric (PV) and Solar Thermal (solar heat) is that these systems are installed by an MCS qualified installer.  Make sure to check the credentials of your installer!
