Joule and Scatec Solar ASA to cooperate on photovoltaic-powered solar fuel production

Joule (Bedford, Massachusetts, U.S.), the pioneer of the direct, solar conversion of CO2 into liquid fuels, on September 5th, 2014 announced that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Scatec Solar ASA (Oslo, Norway), a leading, independent solar power producer. In the MoU the parties have agreed to initiate a process to reach specific terms for a partnership, to support the roll-out of Joule production plants featuring solar photovoltaic (PV) power. Philippines DOE secretary Petilla: Rooftop solar power costs less than electricity from a coal plant

To address the Philippines energy supply, the nation’s Department of Energy (DOE) is pushing the right mix of renewable energy (RE) with traditional sources, such as coal and diesel. “Because RE is indigenous which means it is locally available, we can depend on it for energy security even if there are political issues such as war in other countries,” DOE secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said. This benefit alone, he said, should outweigh the cost implications associated with RE. But private rooftop PV systems also provide electricity at lower cost than coal-fired power plants, Petilla notes. Read more

Italy adopts Decree-Law with significant retroactive FiT cuts, new taxes for self-consumed solar electricity

Kong Sun and Hareon Solar announce investment in PV plants in China totalling 1,000 MW within the next three years

On September 4th, 2014 Kong Sun Holdings Limited (Hong Kong, China) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary (Kong Sun Yong Tai Investment Holdings Ltd., KS) entered into a framework agreement with Hareon Solar Technology Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China) to cooperate in developing solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in the PRC. Pursuant to the framework agreement, the proposed cooperation will include KS Investment acquiring photovoltaic power stations with capacity of 100 MW from Hareon Solor in 2014, and the cooperation on joint development of PV plants with capacities of 300 MW to 400 MW in 2015, and 400 MW to 500 MW in 2016. First Solar starts construction on 250 MW Silver State South PV plant in Primm, Nevada

On September 3rd, 2014 federal, state and local leaders joined executives from NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, Southern California Edison and First Solar, Inc., to break ground on the Silver State South Solar Project, a 250 Megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant being constructed in Primm, Nevada, on the California/Nevada border 40 miles south of Las Vegas. The PV plant is strategically located near a major transmission hub and is adjacent to an existing power plant and transmission line corridor. Read more

Tesla and its partners announced to invest approximately USD 4–5 billion in the Gigafactory through 2020, and Tesla will directly invest approximately USD 2 billion for a scheduled battery 35 GWh lithium-ion cell production facility.
