Losses persist in Yingli's Q1 2014 results

SolarCity moves into PV manufacturing with Silevo acquisition

(San Mateo, California, U.S.) has announced that it will acquire start-up Silevo Inc.(Fremont, California, U.S.), which makes high-efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) modules using a novel cell architecture. The company is planning an initial facility to manufacture Silevo modules in the U.S. state of New York, which it says will reach the capacity to produce more than 1 GW of PV modules annually within the next two years. Yingli powers Malaysia's largest solar PV plant

A subsidiary of Amcorp Group Berhad (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) has commissioned a 10.3 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Malaysia, the largest to date in the nation. The plant in the state of Negri Sembilan utilizes over 40,000 Yingli YGE Series multicrystalline PV modules, covering 14 hectares. “We are pleased to have selected Yingli Green Energy as our module supplier for Malaysia's largest solar power plant,” notes Amcorp Group Berhad Director Encik Shahman Azman. “As the world's largest solar module manufacturer, Yingli provided us with the high-quality solar modules and after-sales support that we required for the project.” Read more

Abengoa Yield goes public

Shares of Abengoa SA's (Seville, Spain) yieldco began trading on the NASDAQ stock market under the symbol “ABY” on June 13th, 2014. This is the first time that a solar developer has held a successful initial public offering (IPO) for a yieldco vehicle. Abengoa Yield plc (Leeds, UK) will be the primary vehicle through which Abengoa will own, manage and acquire renewable energy, conventional power and transmission assets. As of April 1st, 2014 the company owned 11 assets including the Solana and Mojava concentrating solar power (CSP) projects in the United States. Read more

French solar PV market partially rebounds, 163 MW installed in Q1 2014

France installed 163 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the first quarter of 2014, according to statistics released by the nation's Ministry of Ecology, Energy and Sustainable Development (MEDDE). While this is a 48% increase over the dismal level of installations in the first quarter of 2013, it is still far below 2011 and 2012 levels. At the end of the quarter, the nation had 4.89 GW of installed PV. Read more

Skytron enables grid integration of 15.2 MW solar PV plant in Mauritius

Skytron Energy (Berlin, Germany) reports that it has supplied its Skycontrol power plant control system for a 15.2 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in the island nation of Mauritius, which it says helped to meet the nation's demanding grid connection requirements. This is the first utility-scale PV plant in Mauritius, and was built by Tauber Solar Energietechnik GmbH (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany) and Conecon GmbH (Haibach, Germany). Mineirão Stadium hosts the world's first solar-powered World Cup match

The June 14th, 2014 match between Colombia and Greece was the first ever to be played in a stadium powered by solar photovoltaics (PV), according to utility CEMIG (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). Martifer Solar (Oliveira de Frades, Portugal) completed the 1.4 MW PV plant on the roof of the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in May 2013.
