IHS: Global PV installations to reach 15 GW in Q4 2014

IHS Inc. (Englewood, Colorado, U.S.) has predicted that global solar photovoltaic (PV) demand will grow sharply in the second half of 2014 due to incentive changes in several markets and record low system prices. The company forecasts that 15 GW of PV will be installed globally in the fourth quarter of 2014, including 9 GW of PV plants larger than 1 MW. Read more

The U.S. solar photovoltaic (PV) market grew 79% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2014 to reach 1.33 GW, according to GTM Research (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) and Solar Energy Industries Association's (SEIA, Washington D.C.) quarterly report on the market. For the first time, the nation's residential PV market exceeded its commercial market at 232 MW deployed during the quarter versus 225 MW. IHS: UK review of solar PV subsidies could instigate 3 GW rush

(Englewood, Colorado, U.S.) predicts that up to 3 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity could be added in the UK over a nine-month period if the nation pushes ahead with plans to cut support for large PV projects. The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has proposed ending the Renewables Obligation (RO) for PV plants larger than 5 MW on April 1st, 2015. IHS says that if that policy is confirmed in July 2014, it will cause a rush to complete existing projects. Read more

Solarcentury builds 1 MW solar PV plant in Kenya

Solarcentury (London) has completed a 1 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at a tea farm in Kenya, as the largest PV plant to come online in East Africa to date. The company estimates that the plant will reduce Williamson Tea's energy costs by around 30%, by supplying electricity to meet demand at its tea processing factory. The plant will not only reduce the need for electricity from the grid, but will also work in conjunction with diesel generators to supply backup demand when the grid is down. Solarcentury served as lead designer, supplier and installer of the plant, and is also responsible for operations and maintenance. Read more

IKEA set to install 869kW rooftop array on Kansas City-area store
