EnergyTrend: U.S. could rule against Taiwanese solar PV cell makers in trade case

TrendForce's (Taipei City, Taiwan) EnergyTrend division has warned that there is a “moderate” chance that U.S. trade authorities will rule against Taiwanese solar photovoltaic (PV) cell makers if the nation pursues an anti-dumping investigation. The United States Department of Commerce will announce its decision on whether or not to proceed with the investigation on January 22nd, 2014. EnergyTrend says that Taiwanese government agencies and the PV industry should begin searching for relevant data to establish their case. Read more

Apollo Solar becomes world's largest PV equipment maker during year of market collapse

Hanergy (Beijing) subsidiary Apollo Solar became the “clear” world solar photovoltaic (PV) equipment market leader by revenue in 2013, according to a report by NPD Solarbuzz Inc. (Santa Clara, California, U.S.). Solarbuzz notes that 2013 was an extremely difficult year for PV equipment makers, with only USD 1.73 billion in ingot-to-module and thin film equipment sales. When polysilicon equipment is included, this number rises to just over USD 2 billion. Read more

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA, Brussels) is calling on the European Commission to set “ambitious and binding” targets for renewable energy in 2030, following similar calls by eight European nations and two European Parliament committees. However, it notes that prospects are not particularly good under the leadership of EU Commission President José Barroso (EPP). The EC is expected to issue a white paper on a 2030 framework on January 22nd, 2013, which it says could “fall far below the adequate level of ambition”. Read more

Fraunhofer ISE, ABB named among winners of Zayed Future Energy Prize

Fraunhofer ISE (Freiburg, Germany) has been named among the winners of the Zayed Future Energy Prize 2014, which were announced at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE on January 20th, 2014. Fraunhofer ISE won the non-governmental organization (NGO) award, with a price of USD 1.5 million. Other winners include ABB (Zurich), the parent company of inverter maker Power-One (Camarillo, California, U.S.), Abellon CleanEnergy (Ahmedabad, India), battery pioneer Wang Chuanfu and five high schools around the world.
