Power-One to introduce solar power storage solution at Solar Energy UK

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, California, U.S.) will showcase its first residential energy storage solution at the Solar Energy UK trade show in Birmingham, England from October 8th-10th, 2013. The Renewable Energy Accumulator and Conversion Technology (REACT) will be commercially available in 2014. REACT consists of a 4.6 kW single-phase Power-One inverter and a lithium-ion battery, which will provide 2 kWh of usable capacity. NREL releases roadmap for U.S. solar PV “soft cost” reduction

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL, Golden, Colorado, U.S.) has issued a new report which sets a roadmap for reduction of non-hardware “soft” costs for U.S. residential and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. “Non-Hardware ('Soft') Cost-Reduction Roadmap for Residential and Small Commercial Solar Photovoltaics, 2013-2020” charts a path to achieve the DOE's SunShot program targets of USD 0.65/watt for residential PV systems and USD 0.44/watt for commercial systems by 2020. NPD Solarbuzz: TBEA to become China's largest solar PV EPC in 2013

NPD Solarbuzz (Santa Clara, California, U.S.) has released information on the top engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors in China's solar photovoltaic (PV) industry, predicting that Tebian Electric Apparatus (TBEA, Changji, China) will become the nation's leading PV EPC in 2013 with more than 800 MW installed. TBEA has already installed more than 600 MW in the first three quarters of the year, to replace GD Solar Co. Ltd. (Yixing, China) in first place. All together, the top ten EPC contractors, which also includes Zhenfa New Energy (Wuxi, China) and Yingli Solar (Baoding, China) represented 40% of end-market demand. Read more

Lux Research: Current solar PV technologies won't reach U.S. DOE goal

Lux Research Inc. (Boston) has issued a report which finds that the current dominant solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies will not meet a target to reduce installed solar photovoltaic (PV) costs to USD 1-1.50 per watt by 2030, set by the U.S. Department of Energy through for its SunShot Program. “Continuing Education: Going Back to School for Photovoltaic Innovation” finds that prices are likely to be 13% above targets of USD 1 per watt for utility-scale PV, USD 1.25 per watt for commercial PV, and USD 1.50 per watt for residential PV in 2030. It also finds that technological innovations around crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV are likely to come the closest to these goals. Read more

Wormlike hematite photoanode breaks world-record for solar hydrogen production efficiency

The science journal Scientific Reports on September 17th, 2013, released the results of the research “Single-crystalline, wormlike hematite photoanodes for efficient solar water splitting”. Researchers at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) (Ulsan, South Korea), developed a “wormlike” hematite photoanode converting sunlight and water to clean hydrogen energy with an efficiency of 5.3%.
