CSP Key Players Focus on the Desert

By the end of 2013, the largest solar power plants in the world will be generating power from the sun and they won't be using photovoltaic (PV) technology. Brightsource's 277-MW Ivanpah in California, Areva's 250-MW project in Rajasthan, India and many others are all set to come online by the end of the year. The 100-MW Shams 1 project commenced operation in Abu Dhabi in March. "The outlook for CSP has never been brighter," said Alison Mason, Director of Marketing at SkyFuel. Read more

SMA releases three-phase transformerless PV inverter to the U.S. market

SMA Solar Technology AG (Niestetal, Germany) has released its Sunny Tripower three-phase transformerless solar photovoltaic (PV) inverter to the U.S. Market. The company says the inverter is its best-selling line, and offers design flexibility, high efficiency and design safety. The Sunny Tripower TL-US is UL-listed for up to 1000 volts DC maximum system voltage, and offers 98% peak efficiency. The inverter comes in 12, 15, 20 and 24 kW models, and features two independent maximum power point trackers (MPPT), using SMA's OptiTrac MPPT algorithm which minimizes the effects of shading. 25.8 MW PV project under construction in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan

On July 23rd, 2013 homebuilder Sekisui House Ltd. (Osaka, Japan) held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 25.8 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project on a former golf course in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The Sunshine Energy Spring Water project is expected to cost USD 92 million to build, and will comprise 86,100 PV modules covering 16.6 hectares. Sekisui House expects to complete the plant by the end of August 2014. Read more

Hanergy completes acquisition of Global Solar Energy

Hanergy Holding Group Ltd. (Beijing) has completed its equity acquisition of flexible thin-film solar photovoltaic (PV) maker Global Solar Energy Inc. (GSE, Tucson, Arizona, U.S.), following approval from Chinese and U.S. authorities. Hanergy plans to continue GSE's U.S. operations. This is the company's third acquisition of a copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film PV manufacturer in just under one year, following its purchase of Solibro (Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany) and MiaSolé (Santa Clara, California, U.S.). Utility-scale solar capacity only 1.4% of peak summer demand on western U.S. grid

Electricity from solar technologies continues to meet a small portion of peak electricity demand in the Western United States and Canada, according to data in a report by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). “2012 State of the Interconnection” finds only 2.1 GW of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) capacity in 2012 on the WECC grid, which spans most or all of 11 U.S. States, the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, and a small slice of Northern Baja California, Mexico. This equates to less than 1% of generation capacity and 1.4% of peak summer demand. Read more

First Solar announces New Mexico PV projects totaling 23 MW for PNM First Solar, Ne

(Tempe, Ariz.) on July 24th, 2013, announced an agreement with Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) to construct three solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants totaling 23 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. Under the agreement, First Solar is expected to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, using its advanced thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules. PNM is the largest electrical provider in New Mexico, serving more than 500,000 customers in dozens of communities across the state. Read more

Solar Frontier to present lightweight, high-efficiency solar PV modules at Solar Expo Japan

Solar Frontier KK (Tokyo) has announced that it will unveil a lightweight thin-film solar photovoltaic (PV) module and a 170 watt high-efficiency thin-film PV module at the PV Expo in Japan during the week of July 29th-August 2nd, 2013. The Solacis neo weighs only 8.0 kg, and is 6.5 mm thin, roughly the same width as a smart phone, whereas the SF170-S offers a 170 watt rated capacity. Both products are based on Solar Frontier's copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS or CIS) thin-film PV technology, and both will be offered primarily in the Japanese market. Read more

Report finds U.S. states with policies leading in solar PV adoption

Environment America (Washington D.C.) has released a new report looking at the top twelve U.S. states for adoption of solar electric technologies, as measured by per-capita solar capacity. This includes both solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP), although PV represents the vast majority of installed U.S. solar. Lighting the Way notes that these 12 states contain 85% of installed US solar electric capacity, despite only representing 28% of the nation's population. The report finds that the relative effectiveness of solar policies is the dominant factor in the success of the solar markets in these states. Read more
