Monday, 7.1.2013 - 8:55 (Solarserver)

On June 20th, 2013 the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that governments must reimburse value added taxes (VAT) on grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, as generating electricity for the grid using PV is “economic activity”. The case involved a homeowner in Austria, who installed a PV system in 2005 which produces electricity for the Austrian grid through the nation's net metering policy. When Austrian tax authorities denied him a reimbursement for his VAT on the grounds that generation of electricity less than his total home use was not economic activity, he brought his case to court.
