Infinia begins commissioning 1.5 MW dish Stirling solar CSP plant in Utah

Infinia Corporation (Madrid, Spain) has begun commissioning the first concentrating solar power (CSP) systems in a 1.5 MW project at a US Army facility in the state of Utah. The plant comprises 429 Infinia PowerDish systems, based on dish Stirling CSP technology, installed at the Tooele Army Depot. UNEP: Global investments in solar fall 11% despite increased deployment; LCOE for PV declined by up to 40%

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report which finds that global investment in solar technologies fell 11% in 2012 to USD 140 billion, despite increased deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies. “Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2013” notes that a 30 - 40% decline in the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for PV drove increased activity. The report also describes a geographic shift in the deployment of PV, CSP and other renewable energy technologies to developing nations. Read more

Solar Impulse plane to stop in Cincinnati

The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse has changed its schedule to include a brief overnight stopover in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 14th, 2013 to change pilots. The plane's team cites strong cross and head winds, which will prevent the plane from flying from St. Louis, Missouri to Washington DC within 24 hours as originally planned. California to work with ARPA-E on energy research

The California Energy Commission (CEC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) to collaborate on energy research projects. The goals of the joint effort are to reduce energy costs, enhance electricity reliability and minimize environmental impacts, and will involve jointly identifying research related to “cutting-edge” energy technologies. US Senate approves USD 88.2 million for rural renewable energy development

On June 10th, 2013 the US Senate passed a comprehensive farm bill that includes support for rural renewable energy producers through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). S 954 includes USD 88.2 million in REAP funding over five years, which will support loans and grants for agricultural producers to install renewable energy systems.
