IBM, Swiss universities developing new ultra-high concentration solar design

Friday, 4.26.2013 - 11:47 (Solarserver)

IBM Research (Zurich, Switzerland) has announced that a team of scientists from several companies and Swiss universities has developed a prototype of a novel high concentrating solar photovoltaic (HCPV) system which will concentrate sunlight 2,000 times. IBM says this will allow for greater conversion efficiencies. In addition to generating electricity, the HCPV system will have a thermal component and can be used for water desalination and air conditioning. The design is based on a low-cost, large dish concentrator and micro-channel cooled high-performance solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. Read more
