DOE awards USD 10.5 million funding for small business clean energy R&D

On February 20th, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) announced that it has awarded 70 grants totaling USD 10.5 million to small businesses to develop clean energy technologies that could improve manufacturing processes, boost the efficiency of buildings, reduce reliance on foreign oil, and generate electricity from renewable sources. Eneref Institute (Nairobi, Kenya) has released a report on the solar thermal market in Kenya and South Africa, identifying both countries as the most developed solar thermal industries on the continent. The study also highlights Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe as countries with a lot of potential competitiveness in the future. On February 20th, 2013 Vivint Solar Inc. (Provo, Utah, U.S.) announced that it has been included into the Forbes annual ranking of America's Most Promising Companies. Vivint Solar offers solar photovoltaic (PV) solutions including power purchase agreements to customers in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Vivint ranked 46 out of 100 privately-held, high-growth companies. This marks the first year that Vivint was named to the exclusive Forbes list. On January 31st, 2013, Solar Rating and Certification Corp. (SRCC), an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited third-party certification body, announced that it is now listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for certification of solar water heaters in compliance with the new Energy Star requirements.
