juwi starts 7 MW PV project in South Africa

On February 19th, 2013, juwi Renewable Energies (Pty) Ltd. (Wörrstadt, Germany) announced that it has started construction on the 7 megawatt (MW) Rustmo 1 solar photovoltaic (PV) park in the mining town of Rustenburg, South Africa. The Rustmo 1 solar plant is the first of four engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects juwi won during the first tendering round under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP). The project will have a total capacity of 35 MW. Read more

Hanwha supplies PV modules for 2.7 MW PV plant in Germany

On February 19th, 2013, Hanwha SolarOne GmbH (Ismaning, Germany) announced that it has supplied 11,050 solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for a 2.7 megawatts (MW) solar farm on a former tar acid disposal site in Neukirchen, Germany. The PV plant will produce 2.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of solar power per year, which is equivalent to the amount of energy consumed by 500 to 600 households. Read more

Conergy to install 210 kW solar PV array for water desalination plant in Tunisia

On February 19th, 2013, Conergy (Hamburg, Germany) announced that it will install a 210 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system at a water desalination plant in Tunisia. The second largest PV array in the country comprises around 900 Conergy PowerPlus modules installed on Conergy SolarLinea mounting systems. The system will produce 352 megawatt hours (MWh) of solar power per year. Read more

Middle East Electricity and Solar Middle East events, held at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre from February 17th, 2013 - February 19th, 2013, have attracted 35% more visitors than in 2012 for the first two days. The 38th edition of Middle East Electricity attracted a record 1,100 exhibitors from 60 countries, hosting 17 dedicated country pavilions, the organizers note. Read more

Solarbuzz: PV demand reaches 29 GW in 2012

NPD Solarbuzz has released a report which estimates that solar photovoltaic (PV) demand in 2012 reached 29.0 GW, a 4.6% growth over 2011, but smaller than previous estimates by other analysts. The company's latest "Marketbuzz" report found that Asian demand increased to 8.69 GW in 2012, with Chinese demand surpassing German demand towards the end of the year. However, Solarbuzz notes that demand is still far short of supply. Read more

Siemens begins construction on two 50 MW solar PV plants in South Africa

Globeleq Generation Ltd. (London, UK) and consortium partners have celebrated the start of construction on two 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in South Africa's Northern Cape. Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) is constructing the two plants under a lump-sum turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Globeleq expects the two PV plants and a 138 MW wind farm in the Eastern Cape to be operational in mid-2014. Read more

Centrosolar announces restructuring, 2012 results

Centrosolar AG (Munich, Germany) has released provisional figures for 2012, as well as announcing an operational and financial restructuring. These changes include measure to convert bonds to shares and boost the equity base and protect share values through a capital increase. In 2012, Centrosolar revenues fell 22% to EUR 228 million (USD 303 million), with an EBITDA margin between -8% and -10% and net financial liabilities of EUR 90 million (USD 119 million). Read more

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA, Washington DC, US) has launched a new trade group to advance the solar heating and cooling industries in the United States. The U.S. Solar Heating and Cooling Alliance (SHC Alliance) will work to develop a common vision for the industry and raise awareness with policymakers, potential customers, investors and financiers. Mike Healy of Skyline Innovations Inc. (Washington DC, U.S.) will serve as chairman of the SHC Alliance, with Matt Carlson of Sunnovations Inc. (McLean, Virginia, U.S.) serving as vice chairman. JA Solar ups solar PV shipment estimate for 4Q 2012

JA Solar Holding Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) has released a preliminary estimate of fourth quarter 2012 shipments of solar photovoltaic (PV) products, estimating a volume of 480 to 500 MW. This is well above its previous estimate of 380 to 420 MW. JA Solar further expects full year 2012 shipments between 1.68 and 1.70 GW, also above its previous guidance of 1.55 to 1.65 GW. Read more

Indian state Bihar issues RFP for solar PV / aquaculture projects

The state government of Bihar, India has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for projects which co-locate solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and fish farms, under the stated goal of catalyzing the state's rural economy. Up to 150 MW of PV projects 2 - 10 MW-AC will be awarded. The L1 method will be used for the selection process, whereby all bidders must match the lowest accepted bid, with bidding against a benchmark of INR 9.85 (USD 0.182) per kWh. Read more
