IKEA to double size of rooftop PV array at Distribution center in Perryville, Maryland

IKEA (Delft, The Netherlands) on November 7th, 2013, announced plans to nearly double the solar photovoltaic (PV) array atop its Perryville distribution center in Maryland, USA. The 142,530-square-meter solar PV addition, a 2.2-MW array, comprises 7,337 PV modules, and will produce 2,695,355 kWh of solar power annually for the facility. Read more

China Sunergy shows sequential improvements in Q2 2013, but estimates decline in Q3 shipments

China Sunergy Co. Ltd. (Nanjing, China) has released second quarter 2013 results, roughly three months after many other leading solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers. The company reports a 35% year-over-year fall in revenues to USD 71.9 million, a -6.3% operating margin, and a net loss of USD 1.8 million. The company made sequential progress from the first quarter in terms of revenues and shipments but also margins, supported by a 7% increase in average selling prices to USD 0.63 per watt. Since the second quarter, the company has also achieved a new efficiency record of 20.3% with its monocrystalline silicon PV cells, but warns of declining shipments. Read more

Skytron enables dispatchable power from 115 MW of Romanian solar PV plants

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider LSG Building Solutions GmbH (Vienna) has awarded Skytron Energy GmbH (Berlin) a contract to supply its power control solutions for a 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Romania. Skytron's solutions will enable the plant to meet new requirements of the Romanian grid system, including a requirement for power feed directed by local dispatchers and to provide balancing power for frequency support. LSG had previously awarded Skytron contracts to supply a 45 MW and a 20 MW PV project in Romania, for a total of 115 MW of contracts. Read more

Worldwatch Institute finds huge potential for solar in Jamaica

The Worldwatch Institute (Washington D.C.) has released a new report which finds that solar photovoltaics (PV), solar water heating and other forms of renewable energy have strong potential in Jamaica, and that renewables could provide cheaper electricity than the island's current fossil-fuel generation mix. “Jamaica Sustainable Energy Roadmap” finds that while the current level of the nation's PV deployment is “unknown but minor”, Jamaica could meet 22% of electricity demand with utility-scale PV systems at seven sites identified in the study. It also finds that implementation of rooftop PV would help to mitigate the high costs of pending transmission upgrades. Read more

SMA Solar Technology sales continue decline in Q3 2013, while international presence expands

SMA Solar Technology AG (Niestetal, Germany) has released results for the third quarter of 2013, reporting a 32% year-over-year fall in revenues to EUR 248 million (USD 333 million), a -2.7% operating margin and a net loss of EUR 5.8 million (USD 7.8 million). SMA is having a difficult year. Over the first nine months of 2013 revenues fell 41% to EUR 709 million (USD 952 million), with a 33% decline in the volume of inverters sold to 3.96 GW and a -4.2% operating margin. During this time the company has increased the share of its international sales to 69%, and IHS Inc. (Englewood, Colorado, U.S.) notes the impact of weakness in European markets. Read more

UK Offshore Wind Capacity Rises 80 Percent in One Year

“Offtaker of last resort” included in UK Energy Bill

The UK government has confirmed plans to develop an “offtaker of last resort” mechanism to ensure market access for independent solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable energy generators, as part of policy changes in the latest Energy Bill. UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Baroness Verma says that her agency wants the mechanism in place by the time the first contracts for difference (CfD) are signed in the fall of 2014.
