Concentrating photovoltaics: CDB to fund 20 MW solar CPV project in Western China

Renewable energy developer Focusic New Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (Zhengzhou, China) has secured a USD 32.8 million loan from the China Development Bank (CDB, Beijing) for a 20 MW concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) plant to be built on the edge of the Gobi Desert in Xinjiang Province, China. The plant will utilize CPV technology from Soitec SA (Bernin, France), and follows a 3 MW pilot CPV plant which Focusic and Soitec expect to complete by the end of 2013. The 20 MW plant is the first large CPV project in China to secure financing. Read more

AEG Power Solutions is facing financial trouble following collapse in revenues, orders in Q3 2013

AEG Power Solutions BV (Zwanenburg, The Netherlands) reports a collapse in revenues and orders in its division that makes inverters to accompany solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, with revenues falling 73% year-over-year to EUR 7.8 million (USD 10.5 million) in the third quarter of 2013. The Solar Systems Solutions division also reported only EUR 9.7 million (USD 13.1 million) in orders, a 74% fall from a year prior. Across all three divisions revenues fell 36% year-over-year to EUR 53.9 million (USD 72.6 million) with a -21% EBIDTA margin. Read more

Kawa finalizes acquisition of remaining Conergy sales and service units

Kawa Capital Management Inc. (Miami, Florida, U.S.) has closed on its acquisition of the remaining sales and service units of Conergy AG (Hamburg, Germany). This includes Conergy Deutschland GmbH and Conergy Services GmbH, as well as subsidiaries in Great Britain, Italy and Australia. Sales entities in the United States, Canada, Singapore and Thailand were transferred to Kawa in August 2013. Additionally, Conergy CEO Dr. Phillip Comberg will join the board of directors of Kawa Solar Holdings Ltd., with other Conergy executives filling key roles in the company. Read more

First Solar is serving as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for two plants, which at 102M MW-AC and 53 MW-AC respectively are much larger than any PV plants built in the nation to date. Lux Research: Solar PV materials offer opportunities for profit in a growing market

Lux Research (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) has released a new report which predicts that the market for materials used in solar photovoltaic (PV) module production will increase 9.2% annually through 2018, with “double-digit” profit margins for certain materials. In “Photovoltaic Materials Opportunities Beyond Commoditization” Lux argues that the PV module market is not truly commoditized. The result is that the sale of some materials is more profitable than others, including certain gases, metals, polymers, process chemicals and solvents. Read more

Trinity Solar completes 12.3 MW rooftop PV project at New Jersey military base
