Tuesday, 11.19.2013 - 15:56 (Renewable Energy World)
Last month I was a keynote speaker at the Renewable Energy and Mining Summit in Toronto. Given the quality and quantity of mining executives in attendance, I expected the mining industry with its heavy reliance on the remote delivery of a tremendous amount of power, was educated on renewable energy generation and energy storage. I was mistaken. While the mining industry is moving forward with alternative energy generation, it isn’t very educated on energy storage. But the good news is the EPCs and photovoltaic (PV) developers servicing the mining industry clearly “get it” and swamped the American Vanadium booth after my presentation. Tuesday, 11.19.2013 - 11:21 (Solarserver)
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE (Freiburg, Germany) has been awarded project funds within the framework of the U.S. SunShot Initiative. Fraunhofer ISE is one of only three research partners in the program who are not based the U.S. The SunShot Initiative was started in 2011 by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Its aim is to reduce the generation costs for solar electricity in the U.S. down to six U.S. cents per kilowatt hour, thereby making solar energy competitive with conventional fossil fuel energy sources. For over 30 years, Fraunhofer ISE has been working on increasing the energy efficiency of solar cells. Read moreJapan hits 3.9GW of PV installations since FiT introduction

Tuesday, 11.19.2013 - 8:41 (Solarserver)
Fraunhofer ISE (Freiburg, Germany) has conducted a new study on the cost of wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Germany, which finds that both are around the cost of conventional generation, and likely to get cheaper in coming decades. The report finds that cost-effective ground-mounted PV systems built in 2013 in Southern Germany can reach costs of around EUR 0.08 (USD 0.11) per kWh. The study also found that small rooftop PV plants in Northern Germany can reach costs of EUR 0.14 (USD 0.19) per kWh, well below retail household electricity prices of EUR 0.29 (USD 0.39) per kWh. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports that the United States is set to commission nearly 900 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants by the end of 2013. This would represent a roughly 175% increase over the total operational capacity at the beginning of the year. This includes Abengoa's 250 MW Solana CSP plant, which is already commissioned, and BrightSource's 390 MW Ivanpah project. DOE notes that these two projects are much larger than previous CSP projects. Read moreThere are no news available
