PV production technology: Midsummer develops sputtering process for all layers of CIGS solar cells, achieves 15% active area efficiency

Midsummer AB (Järfälla, Sweden) has developed a high-speed process for the manufacture of copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar photovoltaic (PV) cells based on a sputtering of all layers in the PV cell structure. The company has recently achieved a 15.0% active area efficiency on a 225 square centimeter PV cell using this technology. Midsummer also notes that by basing all process steps on sputtering, process cycles can be drastically shortened, and modules can be made on flexible stainless steel substrates. Read more

1,000 rally at Arizona regulatory body in defense of net metering

More than 1,000 solar supporters showed up to a rally at the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) in the U.S. state of Arizona on November 13th, 2013, to express their opposition to a utility proposal to modify the state's net metering policy. This marked the first of two days of hearings that the ACC is holding on Arizona Public Service Co.'s (APS, Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.) proposed changes to the policy, which would give solar photovoltaic (PV) system owners a credit at a substantially lower rate than retail electricity rates for the power they produce. CDU, SPD propose eliminating Germany's feed-in tariff in coalition energy talks

Energy talks between Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have produced initial results which are sharply negative for the nation's Energy Transition, according to an analysis by German Energy Blog. The SPD and CDU have ignored the input of the renewable energy industry, civil society groups, factions of the SPD, the SPD's former coalition partners the Green Party and citizen opinion and are proposing to do away with the feed-in tariff in favor of a market premium model. It is unclear when this would happen. Read more

Northeastern U.S. solar PV markets continue slump in October 2013

New Jersey's solar market continued its slump in September 2013 as Pennsylvania reported a spike in projects registered for solar renewable energy credits (SRECs), according to SRECTrade's (San Francisco, California, U.S.) September 2013 Markets Report. Projects newly registered to create SRECs in New Jersey fell 43% sequentially to only 7.7 MW, a new low in an ongoing collapse starting in the summer. Read more

Centrosolar, Johnson Melloh complete solar PV plant at Fronius USA headquarters

Centrosolar America Inc. (Scottsdale, Arizona, U.S.) and Johnson Melloh Solutions (Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.) have completed a 61 kW rooftop and pole-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at Fronius International GmbH's (Wels, Austria) new U.S. headquarters and manufacturing facility in the U.S. state of Indiana. The project comprises 244 Centrosolar B-Series 250 watt PV modules and ten different Fronius inverters, ranging from 3 kW to 12 kW. 55 kW of the project is mounted on the roof, with the remaining 6 kW utilizing Wattsun dual-axis trackers on pole mounts. Canadian Solar announces PV module supply agreements in China, Turkey

Canadian Solar Inc. (Guelph, Canada) has announced that it will supply 32 MW of its CS6P250P multicrystalline silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) modules to China Perfect Machinery Industry Corp. (Shanghai) for a project in China. The company also reports that it has completed the supply of 2.3 MW of its CS6X-P multicrystalline PV modules to a consortium of Turkish companies for a project located in Kayseri, Turkey. This is a very large project for the nation's emerging market, and the two deals were announced a day before Canadian Solar's third quarter 2013 results where it reported its first quarterly profit in nine quarters.
