Gehrlicher Solar builds 22.5 kW "self-consumption" solar PV project in Southern Spain

Gehrlicher Solar AG 's (Neustadt b. Coburg, Germany) Spanish subsidiary has completed a mini-grid powered by a 30 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) array on a rural residential estate in the Murcia Region of Spain. The nine houses in Cañada Lentisco were not previously connected to the grid, but will now be powered by 90 PV modules on the roof of a farm building, eight SMA inverters and a battery system. Gehrlicher states that the project is a model for other rural electrification projects in Spain. Read more

GTM Research: Latin America, Caribbean to install 13 GW of solar electric capacity over the next five years

GTM Research (Boston, Massachusetts, US) has released a new report which finds that solar markets across Latin America and the Caribbean will grow almost 400% to install 459 MW of solar electric capacity in 2013. "Solar in Latin America & the Caribbean 2013: Markets, Outlook and Competitive Positioning" predicts that annual installations will reach 5.7 GW by 2017, with a cumulative total of 13 GW installed over the next five years. The report lists Chile, Brazil and Mexico as markets with the greatest near-term growth potential. Read more

Siemens reports USD 201 million loss from solar division in latest quarter

In its latest financial report, Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) reports a quarterly loss of EUR 150 million (USD 201 million) from its now-defunct solar business, including pre-tax impairment charges of EUR 115 million (USD 154 million). Siemens' first quarter of fiscal year 2013 ended on December 31st, 2012. Overall, the company reports a 1% increase in revenues to EUR 18.1 billion (USD 24.2 billion) and a 12% year-over-year fall in net income to EUR 1.21 billion (USD 1.62 billion) during the quarter. MASEN opens qualification process for developer of 300 MW of solar CSP at Ouarzazate

On January 23rd, 2013 the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN) opened the qualification process to pre-select potential developers of 300 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants at its site in Ouarzazate, Morocco. The OZZ CSP Next Program is divided into a 100 MW solar tower power CSP project and a 200 MW parabolic trough CSP project, with storage contemplated for both projects. The deadline to submit applications for qualification to bid on these projects is March 25th, 2013. Read more

On January 23rd, 2013, Ecotech Institute (Denver, Colorado, U.S.), which focuses on training students for renewable energy jobs, announced that it has launched the first-ever Clean Jobs Index, aggregating all the available clean jobs in the United States. The national index shows that there were more than three million clean jobs available across the U.S. in 2012. The index breaks down clean jobs by state, with links to local jobs listings. Read more
