JA Solar begins mass production of high-efficiency PV modules based on 5-inch monocrystalline solar cells

JA Solar Holdings Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) has commenced mass production of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules based on its 5-inch (~127 mm) high-efficiency monocrystalline PV cells. The 72-cell PV modules produce a maximum power output of 215 watts and a mainstream power output of 201 watts. The company estimates that this represents an annual accumulated power output 3% higher than comparable PV modules. Read more

GT Advanced Technologies completes restructuring, eliminates business units

Swinerton to build 250 MW-AC solar PV plant on Native American land

K Road Power (New York, New York, US) has awarded a contract to Swinerton Renewable Energy (San Francisco, California, US) to build a 250 MW-AC solar photovoltaic (PV) plant on Native American land in the US state of Nevada. K Road awarded contracts to Swinerton both for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services and operations and maintenance (O&M) for the K Road Moapa Solar Project. Ohio regulators deny Turning Point Solar Project

On January 9th, 2012 the Public Utilities Commission in the US state of Ohio (PUCO) voted 3-1 to deny approval of a 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the state. American Electric Power Inc. GTM: MENA solar PV, CSP market to reach 3.5 GW by 2015

GTM Research (Boston, Massachusetts, US) has partnered with Emirates Solar Industry Association (ESIA) on a new report which forecasts that the annual solar market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region will reach 3.5 GW by 2015, to represent 8% of total global demand. "Middle East and North Africa Solar Market Outlook, 2013-2017" cites natural solar resources, grid prices and electricity needs as "fundamental drivers" in the region. The report estimates that the majority of demand will originate in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, with Saudi Arabia as the region's first GW-scale solar market by 2015. Read more

California Solar Initiative passes 1 GW mark for PV installations

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has announced that the California Solar Initiative (CSI) has supported the construction of 1.07 GW of new solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity by the end of 2012. The CPUC states that this is enough to avoid the building of two conventional power plants. The agency notes that another 332 MW in pending projects are being supported. Read more

TrendForce: polysilicon, silicon wafer prices increasing

TrendForce (Taipei City, Taiwan) has released new data showing that polysilicon and monocrystalline silicon wafer prices are continuing to increase in anticipation of Chinese tariffs against polysilicon from the EU, South Korea and the US. The company's EnergyTrend division estimates that polysilicon spot prices rose to USD 16.0 per kg in the week of January 6-12, 2012, with mono-Si wafer prices rising to USD 1.10 per piece. TrendForce cites optimism about the demand in 2013, which it says could lead to further price increases. Read more
