569 kW rooftop PV plant installed in Boston

On August 23rd, 2012, Broadway Renewable Strategies (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) announced that it has completed a 568.7 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system in the City of Boston (Massachusetts, U.S.). The PV project is part of Mayor Menino's Innovation District Solar Challenge. Broadway, Cargo Venture/ Millennium Partners, Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) and Satcon collaborated on the project. Read more

Chile gives environmental approval for 506.5 MW of PV projects

Chile's Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) has approved four solar photovoltaic projects totaling 506.5 MW in the nation's Antofagasta region. The SEA approved the 76.7 MW and 69.8 MW Laberinto Este and Oeste, 180 MW Encuentro Solar and 180 MW Crucero Solar projects on August 20th, 2012. The four projects represent a total investment of USD 1.2 billion. Read more

Hanwha, Isofoton bid on Q-Cells

Both Hanwha Group (Seoul, Korea) and Isofoton SA (Málaga, Spain) have bid to purchase the operations of Q-Cells SE (Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Q-Cells' creditors are expected to approve one of the bids at a meeting on August 29th, 2012. Hanwha has signed a preliminary agreement with Insolvency Administrator Henning Schorisch, involving a payment of EUR 40 million (USD 50 million) as well as the assumption of hundreds of millions of Euros of business liabilities. Nigeria?s Kaduna state government signs MoU for 30MW solar project

Canadian Solar to build PV power plants in Canada for Penn Energy Renewables

Canadian Solar Solutions, a subsidiary of tier 1 PV manufacturer, Canadian Solar has signed an agreement to build an initial 2 PV power plants for Penn Energy Renewables. The power plants are to be built and operated by the EPC subsidiary in Ontario, Canada with a combined 18.7MW (AC) electricity output. Protermosolar: Spanish CSP plants set new record in meeting Spanish electricity demand

Protermosolar (Spain) reports that Spain's concentrating solar power (CSP) plants produced enough electricity to meet 3.23% of the nation's demand on July 15th, 2012, a new record for the technology. SolarWorld supplies PV modules for hurricane shelters in Florida

Solar thermal adoption lagging through the U.K.'s Renewable Heat Incentive

Confirming industry concerns about the efficacy of the program, as of August 16th, 2012 only one solar thermal system has been installed through the U.K.'s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The program offers subsidies for such installations for the commercial, industrial, government and non-profit sectors. This may be due to the limited scope of the RHI, as the nation's Renewable Heat Premium Payment has incentivized 1,706 residential solar thermal systems through its first phase. However, the RHI has supplied incentives for 144 other renewable heat installations, including 136 solid biomass boilers. Read more

The Board of Supervisors in Imperial County, California has approved construction of three solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 275 MW under development by 8minutenergy Renewables LLC (Folsom, California, U.S.) and Gestamp Solar SL (Madrid, Spain). The board voted unanimously to provide conditional use permits for the 70 MW Calipatria Solar Farm 1, the 50 MW Midway Solar Farm 1 and the 155 MW Midway Solar Farm 2. 8minutenergy notes that the projects underwent a comprehensive environmental study prior to approval. On August 23rd, 2012, Circular Energy (Austin, Texas, U.S.) announced that it has completed installation of over 426 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) systems spanning five apartment complexes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (Texas, U.S.). All of the complexes are managed by Centaurus Property Management, who commissioned the projects. The properties are located in Dallas, Farmers Branch, Irving and Fort Worth, the company states.
