On July 31st, 2012, Conergy AG (Hamburg, Germany) announced that it has secured two major orders for three photovoltaic (PV) plants with a first phase total capacity of 3.4 megawatts (MW) for Grimmway Enterprises Inc., a carrot producer. Conergy will complete construction of the first three solar PV plants by the end of 2012. The plants will be located on three carrot plantations in the Californian Central Valley, in Malaga, Bakersfield and Lamont. A subsidiary of Consolidated Edison Inc. (New York, New York, U.S.) has completed the acquisition of two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 92 MW-DC (70 MW-AC) in California from a subsidiary of GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd. (Hong Kong, China). The two projects are located in Alpaugh, Tulare County, and scheduled for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2012. Consolidated Edison Development (Valhalla, New York, U.S.) will own and operate both plants, and sell the electricity generated to Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E, San Francisco, California, U.S.) under 25-year power purchase agreements. According to the latest data released by the U.K.'s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the U.K. PV market has again spiked in advance of the August 1st, 2012 cut to feed-in tariffs. On August 1st, 2012 feed-in tariff rates for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants smaller than 4 kilowatt (kW) fell to GBP 0.16/kWh (USD 0.25/kWh) from GBP 0.21/kWh (USD USD 0.33/kWh), and contract terms fell to 20 years from 25 years. The nation's Solar Trade Association (STA) states that investing in PV will continue to be attractive for homeowners and businesses despite these cuts. Advanced Energy Industries Inc. (AE, Fort Collins, Colorado, U.S.) has released results for its second quarter of 2012, reporting a 12% sequential increase in sales in its Solar Energy business unit to USD 50.8 million, with a 5.4% operating margin in the unit. Overall, the company reported a 9.4% increase in sales to USD 116 million and a net income of USD 8.9 million. TrendForce (Taipei City, Taiwan) reports that solar photovoltaic (PV) product demand has fallen sharply in August 2012, with rapidly falling prices. The company attributes this to the ongoing trade case in the United States and pending trade cases in the EU and China. TrendForce reports the steepest decline in cell prices, estimating a 5.27% decline in the past week for both multi-crystalline and mono-crystalline silicon PV cells to an average of USD 1.741 and USD 1.951 per piece respectively. The SolarLoan program allows homeowners to receive all the benefits of investing in solar without any of the upfront costs, Engensa emphasizes.
