PV production technology: Plansee introduces new molybdenum alloys

Plansee SE (Reutte, Austria) has announced the development of two new molybdenum alloys to serve as back contact layers for copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin film solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. The company states that its molybdenum-sodium (MoNa) alloy will allow for more precise sodium doping, and that its molybdenum-tantalum (MoTa) alloy provides better corrosion resistance. On August 9th, 2012 Andrew Cuomo, governor of the U.S. state of New York, announced the availability of USD 107 million in funding through a new phase of the NY-Sun Initiative for customer-sited solar photovoltaic (PV) projects larger than 50 kW. This includes USD 36.4 million available in 2012 and USD 70.5 million available in 2013 through the NY-Sun Competitive PV program. A day prior on August 8th, 2012 Governor Cuomo announced the awarding of USD 30 million for 16 PV projects totaling 34 MW at multiple sites through a separate NY-Sun sub-program. At least three law firms have filed class action lawsuits against Suntech Power Holdings Company Ltd. (Wuxi, China) on behalf of investors, in connection with its claims of fraud over bonds allegedly pledged as security to cover its investment in Global Solar Fund SCA (Luxembourg). The law firms claim that Suntech "lacked internal and financial controls" and had made materially false and misleading statements, resulting in artificially inflated stock prices. Suntech has claimed that it was potentially defrauded by a pledge of non-existent German government bonds, however the lawsuits allege that the bonds had never been pledged. AEG Power Solutions Group (Zwanenburg, the Netherlands) has released results for the second quarter of 2012, reporting a 10% year-over-year decline in revenues in its RES business segment to EUR 51.6 million (USD 63.4 million) and a 20% EBITDA margin. AEG states that it expects orders to recover due in part to a framework contract with Activ Solar GmbH (Vienna, Austria). The company also announced the sale of a 5.75 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Puglia, Italy for EUR 24.3 million (USD 29.9 million) including the assumption of EUR 17.4 million (USD 21.4 million) in debt. Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (Sandvika, Norway) has announced that it will receive USD 8.53 million in grants from Singapore's Energy Innovation Office (EIO) for solar photovoltaic (PV) cell research. The grant through EIO's Clean Energy Research Program (CERP) will assist with its efforts to develop and industrialize cost-effective and high performing modules based on back-contact cells using its Metal Wrap Through (MWT) technology. Phoenix Solar AG (Sulzemoos, Germany) has released second quarter 2012 results, reporting a 57% year-over-year decline in revenues to EUR 46.5 million (USD 57.2 million), a -28% operating margin and net loss of EUR 15.3 million (USD 18.8 million). The decline in the company's Components & Systems Group was particularly sharp, falling 73% year-over-year to EUR 19.2 million (USD 23.6 million), and representing only 41% of total revenues during the quarter.
