Arizona Public Service announces RFP for a 32 MW PV plant

On August 8th, 2012, Arizona Public Service Co. (APS, Phoenix, Arizona) announced that it has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for the construction of a 32 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Gila Bend, Ariz. Satcon reduces losses in 2Q 2012, maintains U.S. PV market position

Satcon Technology Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) has released results for the second quarter of 2012, reporting a 2.5% decrease in revenues to USD 23.7 million, a -27% operating margin and a net loss of USD 6.56 million. The company more than halved its losses and improved margins during the quarter, as well as remaining the leading supplier to the U.S. commercial and utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) markets. Satcon shipped 91 MW of its PowerGate Plus, Prism Platform and Equinox power electronics solutions during the quarter, with North America representing 85% of revenue. Read more

China Sunergy to supply 50 MW of PV modules for projects in Romania, Macedonia

China Sunergy Company Ltd. (Nanjing, China) has agreed to supply 50 MW of its multi-crystalline solar photovoltaic (PV) modules to V2M Ltd. (Bulgaria) and its affiliates for projects in Romania and Macedonia. The company will supply the modules in the third and fourth quarters of 2012. V2M will supply project development and engineering, procurement and construction services for these projects, and has already secured project and bridge financing from Tokuda Bank (Sofia, Bulgaria). Poland introduces draft feed-in tariff policy including PV plants

The government of Poland has introduced a draft policy to create a system of feed-in tariffs (FiTs), including rates of USD 0.334/kWh for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants larger than 100 kW. Poland's Ministry of the Economy has analyzed an initial set of comments on the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Act, which is part of a package of legislation that still needs approval by various ministries and the nation's parliament. If approved the policy will probably not take effect until early 2013. Read more

U.S. CIGS PV producer MiaSolé to restructure, lay off 200 workers

MiaSolé Inc. (Santa Clara, California, U.S.) has announced that it will reorganize its manufacturing and operations, including laying off employees in manufacturing and operations. The company states that the restructuring will ensure continued development and ongoing sales of its copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. Company representatives declined to comment on the number or timing of layoffs, however VentureWire has reported that 200 employees will be laid off. Read more

Gujarat in talks with IFC for 1,000MW solar project

The government of the state of Gujarat in India has confirmed it is exploring the possibility of setting up a 1,000MW solar power project in conjunction with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Continued restructuring at Phoenix Solar dents first half-year results

Sharp 2Q 2012 solar revenues fall to USD 532 million

Sharp Corporation (Osaka, Japan) has released its second quarter 2012 results, reporting a 18% decrease in revenues in its solar division to JPY 41.9 billion (USD 532 million). The company blames falling demand in Europe and intensified competition in Japan for this decline. Overall, Sharp had a difficult quarter, with a 28% year-over-year decline in sales to JPY 459 billion (USD 5.83 billion), a -21% operating margin, and a net loss of JPY 138 billion (USD 1.75 billion).
