Solaer installs Conergy modules at first 5MW UK PV project

Solaer has constructed its first PV project in the UK, the company has announced. After connecting a 5.3MW project to the grid in Spain recently, the company has installed 21,000 PH solar modules manufactured by Conergy at a 5MW project in Eastcott, Cornwall. Read more

IEA: Global PV capacity to more than triple by 2017

On July 5th, 2012 the International Energy Agency released a new report which predicts that global installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacities will more than triple to 230 GW in 2017, with concentrating solar power (CSP) capacities growing more than five-fold to 11 GW during that time. The agency also predicts that solar heating capacities will more than double to over 500 GW-thermal in 2017. These predictions are part of an overall 40% growth in renewable energy generation forecast in "Mid-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2012", the first medium-term report that the IEA has written on renewable energy. TrendForce: German feed-in tariff cut impacts to be "mild"

TrendForce (Taipei City, Taiwan) has released an analysis stating that while the market impact of cuts to Germany's feed-in tariff will be limited, the policy has sent a signal to manufacturers to adopt a more conservative outlook towards the solar photovoltaic (PV) market in the second half of 2012. TrendForce also notes slight decreases in prices across the PV value chain in the most recent week, with polysilicon prices falling 0.7% to USD 21.07/kg. The organization reports that even PV cell prices have fallen, and that wafer prices continue to decline. Read more

Larsen & Toubro wins 10MW turnkey EPC contract

According to reports from Larsen and Toubro, its solar unit landed an Rs 125 crore order for turnkey EPC services for 10MW of solar PV systems. No further information was given regarding the contract, but the company advised that it continues to see growth opportunities in India?s solar market simply because the country intends to increase its solar capacity to 20,000MW by 2020. IPC begins construction of 10MW Brockville PV project in Ontario

Dasol Solar Energy exempt from anti-dumping duties, investigation

Anji Dasol Solar energy recently revealed that since it uses silicon cells imported from Germany and Norway, it has been excluded from the anti-dumping and countervailing PV investigations occurring between China and the US. WGL Holdings to finance USD 50 million of hybrid PV/solar thermal systems

WGL Holdings Inc. (Washington D.C., U.S.) has agreed to provide project capital through a subsidiary to EchoFirst Inc. (Fremont, California, U.S.) to support financing and deployment of up to USD 50 million of EchoFirst's hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV)/solar water heating systems. WGL states that the funding will support the United State's first combined solar electric and solar water-heating lease, which will be available for both new and existing homes. Read more

Hanwha constructs 80kW PV installation at Chinese Nature Reserve

Hanwha Solar One has completed an 80kW PV installation at China?s Baijitan National Nature Reserve of Lingwu City, the company has announced. Hanwha collaborated on this project with the United Nations convention to combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the State Forestry Administration and Forestry Department of the Ningxia Hiu region. Sonnedix acquires 24MW PV plant in France

PV plant developer Sonnedix has bought a PV plant in the north-east of France, the company has announced. The 24MW Toul 3 project, located near the city of Nancy, has been constructed by EDF EN Services and is part of the 115MW Toul-Rosières PV park, the largest European solar park. Toul 3 has been constructed on a former NATO site, and is equipped with 500,000 First Solar panels as well as SMA inverters. The PV plant is expected to commence commercial operation this summer. Parabel AG completes 40.5 MW Jännersdorf Solar Park before FIT cut deadline

Parabel AG (Berlin, Germany) reports that it commissioned the 40.5 MW Jännersdorf Solar Park on a formerly military airfield in the German state of Brandenburg on June 30th, 2012. The timing of commissioning of the plant qualifies it for participation in the nation's feed-in tariff before a provision eliminating eligibility for large plants takes effect. The plant is comprised of 168,000 Trina, Suntech and Hareon PV modules on 5,200 Schletter mounting systems, as well as 1,900 Siemens Sinvert PVM inverters. Read more

DECC report finds more affluent, older, rural residents installing more solar

The U.K.'s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has released a new report which finds that solar photovoltaic (PV) installations through the nation's feed-in tariff (FiT) are concentrated in more affluent households with higher energy consumption. "Identifying trends in the deployment of domestic solar PV under the Feed-in Tariff scheme" also finds that rural areas have a greater density of domestic PV installations, as do areas with more educated, older residents. Solar Impulse to begin return flight to Spain

On July 6th, 2012 at 6:00 AM local time Solar Impulse was scheduled to begin its return flight to Europe from Africa. The solar-powered plane is expected to land in Madrid-Barajas airport in Spain on July 7th at 12:30 AM local time, returning from a nearly 4,000 km journey without using any fuel. Solar Impulse states that the highlight of the journey was reaching Ourzazate, Morocco, the site of a planned concentrating solar power (CSP) plant. The team also states that the decision to begin the return flight required careful analysis and calculations due to strong jet streams, which will provide a technical challenge. Read more

IEA report expects renewable power generation to continue steady growth over next 5 years

A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) has determined that over the next five years, in spite of economic uncertainty, global power generation from hydropower, solar, wind and other renewable resources will increase by over 40% to 6,400TWh. The report, ?Medium ?Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2012?, finds that renewable electricity generation should expand by 1,840TWh between 2011 and 2017, nearly 60% more than the 1,160TWh growth found to have taken place between 2005 and 2011. A coalition of conservation organizations have reached a settlement agreement with U.S. federal agencies to revise a transmission plan for the Western United States, including facilitating more renewable energy generation. IFC mulls USD 50 million debt financing to Green Infra for 25 MW of PV in Rajasthan

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is considering providing a USD 50 million debt financing facility to Green Infra Ltd. (GIL, New Delhi, India) to support the building of two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants totaling 25 MW in the Indian state of Rajasthan. GIL plans to build a 20 MW and a 5 MW PV plant using thin film PV modules on 65 hectares that represent a mixture of private and public land in the state's Jodhpur district. On June 29th, 2012 the IFC published an Environmental and Social Review and a Summary of Investment Information on the project. Read more
