bSolar debuts its new bifacial PV solar cells

bSolar has advised that its high-efficiency, bifacial PV crystalline silicon solar cells are ready to be showcased during Intersolar Europe in Munich June 14-16. The company?s bifacial cells use the cells? back side to collect reflected and diffused sunlight in order to produce added electricity. They are manufactured using p-type wafers, standard equipment and production processes. Read more

EPIA puts China and India ahead of Europe in global installed PV capacity for 2016

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association has forecast its market outlook until 2016, reports Reuters. With 2012?s capacity estimated to be between 90 and 110GW, the EPIA is predicting a 200-400% growth over the next five years. If the EPIA?s calls to the European Union to improve its solar policy falls on deaf ears, governmental support in countries like China and India will overtake Europe?s dominance, which is cutting back solar incentive schemes and imposing moratoriums. Poll: Los Angeles residents overwhelmingly support more rooftop PV

A poll, conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin and Metz & Associates, reveals that a significant majority of Los Angeles (California, U.S.) residents wants more rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The poll was part of the Vote Solar Initiative. According to the survey, three-quarters, or 76%, of respondents specifically feel that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) should be doing more to expand the use of local rooftop solar in Los Angeles. PV production: centrotherm photovoltaics AG reports strong increase in orders, operating losses across all divisions in 1Q 2012

On May 4th, 2012 centrotherm photovoltaics AG (Blaubeuren, Germany) released financial results for the first quarter of 2012, reporting EUR 255 million (USD 332 million) in new orders, including a EUR 227 million (USD 295 million) order from Sonelgaz SpA (Alger, Algeria) to construct a solar photovoltaic (PV) module factory in Algeria. This significant increase in orders goes against the trend of an industry-wide collapse in manufacturing equipment spending, which has also affected Centrotherm. In the first quarter of 2012, the company reported a 56% year-over-year decline in revenues to EUR 82.5 million (USD 107 million) and a -52% operating margin. Read more

SunPeak completes 23 MW-AC PV plant in California's Imperial Valley

On May 4th, 2012 SunPeak Solar LLC (Palm Desert, California, U.S.) celebrated the completion of a 23 MW-AC solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Southern California. The Imperial Valley Solar Company (IVSC) 1 PV plant is the largest PV plant completed to date in the Imperial Valley, where several projects larger than 100 MW are under construction. SunPeak has connected the plant to the grid, and expects to energize it on May 14th, 2012, completing the transition of the site from a trash-strewn lot to clean electricity production. Read more

Kyocera states that it will provide a package that includes its PV modules and up to 100% financing of total project cost for qualified buyers through Kyocera Solar Finance. First Solar completes 50 MW-AC Silver State North PV plant

On May 7th, 2012 First Solar Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, U.S.) and Enbridge Inc. (Calgary, Canada) announced the completion of the 50 MW-AC Silver State North solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in the U.S. state of Nevada, at a ceremony attended by U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. The plant is the first of 16 large-scale solar projects to be completed on land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management under the Obama Administration. Arizona Legislature Exempts the Sale of Renewable Energy Credits from State Sales Tax

Affirming its commitment to the development of renewable energy resources, the Arizona legislature recently passed legislation exempting the sale and/or use of Renewable Energy Credits (generally referred as "RECs") from Arizona's transaction privilege tax, which operates similar to a sales tax. Given that Arizona's state transaction privilege tax is over seven percent in most counties, and that city tack on an additional 2 to 3 percent tax, the decision to exempt the sale of RECs from a 10 percent tax is a significant development that should encourage the development of renewable energy in Arizona.
