Q-cells supplies 7 MW of thin-film PV modules to Ikea in Italy

On May 3rd, 2012, Q-CELLS (Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany) announced that it has received an order for 7 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules from home furnishings retailer IKEA. Q-CELLS will supply its CIGS thin-film modules, Q-SMART, for the installation on the roof-top of the main warehouse of IKEA in the Northern Italian town of Piacenza. EMCORE reports decline in PV revenue, losses in quarterly results

On May 3rd, 2012 EMCORE Corporation released financial results for its most recent financial quarter, reporting a 17% sequential decrease in revenues for its Photovoltaics segment to USD 15.8 million, which it attributes to a delay in shipping a large solar photovoltaic (PV) cell order. The company's second quarter of fiscal year 2012 ended on March 31st, 2012. Overall, the company reported a slight decrease in revenue to USD 37.8 million, an operating loss of USD 8.9 million, and a net loss of USD 9.3 million. Read more

Power-One?s first-quarter revenue exceeds guidance; even stronger demand expected for second quarter

Logging a quarterly revenue figure of US$226 million, inverter and power management solution provider Power-One has reported higher-than-guided first-quarter 2012 revenue, a result of increased demand for its residential and commercial inverters, according to the company. Power-One has also stated that it expects the second quarter of 2012 to yield increased demand, forecasting revenue of between US$240 and 260 million, which would represent a sequential increase of 6% to 15%. REC to supply 20 MW of PV modules for plants in Bulgaria

On May 3rd, 2012, Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC, Sandvika, Norway) announced that it has signed multiple agreements to supply a total of 20 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for plants in Bulgaria. These include a deal to supply 10 MW of its REC 240 W Peak Energy modules to ALMA-D (Sofia, Bulgaria) for a 6 MW PV plant in Kamenar and a 4 MW PV plant in Kameno. Sanmina-SCI to build Satcon PV inverters in Ontario

On May 3rd, 2012, Satcon Technology Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) announced that it has finalized an agreement with Sanmina-SCI Corporation for the manufacture of its solar inverters at Sanmina facilities in Ottawa, Canada. Sanmina-SCI will manufacture Satcon PowerGate Plus 50 kW, 100 kW, 250 kW and 500 kW inverters, as well as the company's Prism Platform. This will allow these products to comply with the domestic content requirement in Ontario's feed-in tariff. Read more

Power-One revenues decline 18% sequentially on slower inverter sales

On May 3rd, 2012 Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, California, U.S.) released financial results for the first quarter of 2012 reporting an 18% quarter-over-quarter decrease in net sales to USD 226 million, an 8% operating margin, and a net income of USD 5 million. This sequential decrease in revenues was due to a 22% decline in sales from the company's Renewable Energy Solutions division to USD 149 million, which also represents a 2% decrease from the first quarter of 2011. Clean Power Finance, Morgan Stanley, Main Street Power create USD 300 million solar leasing facility

On May 3rd, 2012, Clean Power Finance Inc. (San Francisco, California, U.S.), Morgan Stanley (New York, New York, U.S.) and Main Street Power Company Inc. (Boulder, Colorado, U.S.) announced the creation of a residential solar lease facility which will fund up to USD 300 million in projects. Zions Energy Link is the first member of a syndicate of banks that will provide funding for the MySolar facility. Through the program, solar installers in Clean Power Finance's network will be able to offer MySolar leases to homeowners using sales software platform CPF Tools, initially in the U.S. states of Arizona and California. TÜV Rheinland to offer comprehensive testing programs for PV at Intersolar Europe

TÜV Rheinland will present comprehensive testing programs and special tests for solar photovoltaic (PV) modules at the Intersolar Europe 2012 trade show in Munich, June 13th-15th, 2012. The organization states that these tests exceed basic design certifications as specified by IEC 61215 or IEC 61646, including salt spray and ammonia tests, the "PV+Test" and the "Power Controlled" test seal. TÜV Rheinland says that these expanded test regimes are a response to changing market conditions. Read more

Abengoa reports growth across divisions in 1Q 2012, currently develops 1.8 GW of concentrating solar power projects

On May 4th, 2012 Abengoa SA (Seville, Spain) released financial results for the first quarter of 2012, reporting an 18% year-over-year increase in revenues to EUR 1.76 billion (USD 2.29 billion), a 16% EBITDA margin, and a 58% increase in net income to EUR 89 million (USD 116 million). Two days earlier on May 2nd, 2012 Abengoa announced that it has successfully refinanced EUR 1.57 billion (USD 2.04 billion) of its long-term corporate bank debt, extending the maturity of this debt by more than three years. This includes the right to increase this financing by up to EUR 300 million (USD 390 million). Read more

Massachusetts Sets Strict Regulations for Biomass: Will This Influence Further Restrictions?

The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources released a new set of strict standards for biomass in early May that have the potential to cut subsidies for developing plants. According to these new requirements, all qualifying biomass plants must generate power at 50 percent efficiency to qualify for one-half Renewable Energy credit (REC) per MWh, and 60 percent for one full REC. These new standards are up from the previous 25 percent efficiency requirements. Plants will also be required to analyze lifecycle emissions to demonstrate at least 50 percent reductions over 20 years. Read more
