Revenues, shipments bounce back as Yingli reports small loss in 1Q 2012

On May 30th, 2012 Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Ltd. (Baoding, China) released results for the first quarter of 2012, reporting a 22% sequential increase in revenues to USD 496 million, an operating loss of 4.3%, and a net loss of USD 44.6 million. Yingli reports that module shipments increased 44% sequentially during the quarter, and predicts that shipments will increase another 15% in the second quarter of 2012. These numbers represent a recovery from its difficulties in the fourth quarter of 2011. Read more

Solea to build 1 MW off-grid PV plant for mining operation in South Africa

On May 25th, 2012 Solea Renewables Pty Ltd. (Johannesburg, South Africa) announced that it has signed a turnkey contract with the South African subsidiary of Cronimet Mining Energy GmbH (Karlsruhe, Germany) to deliver a 1 MW off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) plant to power a mining operation in the nation. The plant will be South Africa's first off-grid PV plant of this scale, and Solea states that this will provide the mining company with a grid-independent power supply during daytime operations. Solea expects to break ground on the plant in July 2012, with commissioning scheduled for September 2012. Read more

Yingli Green trumps Suntech in Q1 revenue: new market leader in the making

The PV industry could be witnessing the emergence of a new market leader after Yingli Green posted first quarter 2012 revenue of US$500 million, trumping Suntech Power Holding?s US$410 million. Yingli Green also reiterated its 2012 PV module shipment target of between 2.4GW and 2.5GW, while Suntech recently guided shipments to be in the range of 2.1GW to 2.5GW. The companies are therefore locked in a battle for market leader bragging rights. Read more

Conergy to build 10.5 MW PV plant on historic estate in Germany's Saarland

Conergy AG (Hamburg, Germany) announced that it will build a 10.5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant on the historic Linslerhof estate in the Saarland region, Germany. The Linslerhof estate is owned by the von Boch investor family. Conergy will supply 44,000 PowerPlus modules for the solar project, which will be Saarland's biggest PV installation. The company will also provide 30 Conergy IPG 300C central inverters. Read more

China Everbright Bank provides USD 800 million credit facility to GCL-Poly

GCL-Poly has announced a strategic cooperation agreement with the Suzhou branch of China Everbright Bank Company Ltd. (Beijing, China), through which China Everbright Bank will provide GCL-Poly with a credit facility of RMB 5 billion (USD 800 million). GCL-Poly states that it will use the funds to support its internal development. The company has also stated that it plans to expand its solar photovoltaic (PV) project development business in China, the United States and emerging markets. Read more

IHS iSuppli: U.S. tariffs could halt 45% of PV module imports

On May 29th 2012, IHS iSuppli (El Segundo, California, U.S.) released an analysis of the impact of pending anti-dumping tariffs against China through the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), stating that such actions could suspend 45% of solar photovoltaic (PV) module shipments to North America in 2012. The company's latest "IHS iSuppli PV Perspectives Report" states that many Chinese PV companies will suspend shipments into the U.S. PV market, resulting in the temporary removal of 1.5 GW of shipments to the region. IHS iSuppli also states that this will drive up costs for U.S. PV projects. Read more

On May 26th, 2012, Torresol Energy Investments S.A. (Vizcaya, Spain) announced that its 19.9 megawatt (MW) Gemasolar solar thermal plant has received the visit of a delegation from China's government, led by the chairman of the standing committee of the national people's congress of China Mr. Wu Bangguo. The Gemasolar solar thermal plant is located near the town of Fuentes de Andalucia, Spain. The plant is capable of generating 110 gigawatt hours (GWh) of solar power annually, enough for 27,500 households. Gemasolar is the first commercial concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with central tower receiver and molten salt storage technology. Read more

U.K.: 5-MW Westmill solar farm goes cooperative

Public Utilities Commission increases system cost caps on California Solar Initiative program

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has increased the system cost caps on the California Solar Initiative (CSI) program, according to a May 24th, 2012 statement. JA Solar responds to DOC?s preliminary antidumping tariff rates on imported Chinese solar products

Q-Cells North America completes third phase of 69MW solar park in Ontario

BLM issues draft environmental impact statement for up to 750 MW McCoy Solar PV Project

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for NextEra Energy Resources LLC's (West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S.) McCoy Solar Energy Project, a solar photovoltaic (PV) project which will be up to 750 MW in capacity. The majority of the project will be located on 31 square kilometers of public land in California managed by the BLM, in two units up to 250 MW and 500 MW in size. The publication of the draft EIS initiated a public comment period, the beginning of a regulatory process which will culminate in a decision by the BLM. Read more

Australian Capital Territory pre-selects projects for Solar Auction

The government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has pre-selected 22 proposals totaling 148 MW to bid in the state's competitive solicitation program for solar photovoltaic (PV) generation. 10 bidders have put forth these 22 proposals, from which 40 MW of projects will be chosen in the final stage of the Solar Auction. 15 of the proposals have already submitted price bids, and will participate in a fast-track process wherein 20 MW of projects will be awarded in August 2012. Qatar Solar Technologies secures financing for polysilicon plant

On May 29th, 2012 Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec, Doha, Qatar) signed a financing agreement for the construction of its solar-grade polysilicon production plant, which it estimates will cost USD 1 billion. The financing was secured by Masraf Al Rayan (Doha, Qatar). QSTec noted strong interest from both local and international finance corporations, but stated that it was able to finance the project from within the Qatari banking sector. Read more
