Powerway (Foshan City, China) has developed a new anti-subsidence photovoltaic (PV) mounting system in Malaysia, which will be applied to a land?ll-based 2 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant. Powerway, which on own account is the ?rst Chinese solar farm builder to develop anti-subsidence PV structures, is pioneering land?ll-tailored plant designs, the company states. Read more

Zentric secures USD 50 million in financing for PV plants in the U.S.

On May 8th, 2012 Zentric Inc. (Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.) announced that it has negotiated a debt financing agreement with ZW United Credit & Investment Ltd. (Shenzhen, China) for up to USD 50 million. Under the agreement, ZW United will act as a broker to arrange for securities that will enable Zentric to secure corporate bond funding. The arrangement will allow funding for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants which Zentric plans to build in the United States. Read more

Motech names Eric Kuo head of U.S. PV module business

On May 8th, 2012 Motech Industries Inc. (Tainan, Taiwan) announced that it has named Eric Kuo as president of its U.S.-based solar photovoltaic (PV) module business, Motech Americas. Motech states that Kuo brings over 15 years of global experience to the position. Prior to Motech Americas, Kuo served as managing director from MSI Computer India PVT, Ltd. (Delhi, India), and has also served as managing director of European operations for Edimax Technology Company Ltd. (New Taipei City, Taiwan). Read more

German PV manufacturer Soltecture files for insolvency, expects to continue operations

On May 9th, 2012 Soltecture GmbH (Berlin, Germany) applied to open insolvency proceedings. The insolvency court in Berlin/Charlottenburg, Germany has appointed Hartwig Albers from Brinkmann & Partner (Hamburg, Germany) as preliminary insolvency administrator. Soltecture states that after "extensively" exploring financing options, it saw no viable option for avoiding insolvency, citing the decline in solar photovoltaic (PV) module prices. The company also states that it expects to continue operations at its headquarters in Aldershof, Germany with an industrial investor. Read more

GERO Solarpark?s 28MW solar PV plant inaugurated in Germany

GERO Solarpark GmbH?s 28MW solar power plant was inaugurated in Amsdorf, near Halle, Germany, with Saxony-Anhalt prime minister Dr Reiner Haseloff in attendance. The project is a joint venture set up by GETEC green energy AG and the ROMONTA group. Despite the ?50 million investment being overshadowed by federal government plans to bring forward cuts to solar power subsidies, the companies have been able to realize the project in seven weeks after ground was broken on the site. Westinghouse Solar, CBD Energy to merge

(Double Bay, New South Wales, Australia) announced the signing of a merger agreement between the two companies. The merger has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies and is planned to take effect in the third quarter of 2012, following closing conditions and approval by shareholders of both companies. Solar water pump wins prize in innovation competition

On May 7th, 2012 The HCT-Wharton Innovation Tournament 2021 named KarmSolar's (Cairo, Egypt) off-grid high-capacity solar water pumping device as the inaugural winner at its event in Abu Dhabi, UAE. SolarWorld increased shipments in Q1 2012

In the first three months of 2012, SolarWorld AG has announced it increased its shipments of solar power modules and complete kits in the trade segment. On the German market in particular, the demand for solar modules and system solutions rose due to the unexpectedly early and significant cuts in subsidies. Canadian Solar?s shipments drop by 21% in first quarter

Canadian Solar has reported a drop of over 21% in module shipments, logging 343MW in 1Q?12 compared to 436MW in 4Q?11. Alex Solar to build 1 GW of PV plants in Jinchang, China, over the next four years

On May 3rd, 2012 Shanghai Alex Solar Energy Science and Technology Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) signed an agreement with the municipal government of Jinchang, China to develop 1 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in the city over the next four years to 2016. Alex Solar will own, finance and develop the project, which is projected to involve a total investment of CNY 11 billion (USD 1.7 billion), and will include the construction of a 300 MW PV factory in the city's New Economic and Technological Development Zone. Jinchang Communist Party officials note that the project comes in time to support the nation's 12th Five-Year Plan. Read more

Apparently little happened in the way of new, operational geothermal plants in 2011, if you look at the Geothermal Energy Association's 2012 annual Power Production and Development report. Although the United States remains in the lead globally in terms of installed capacity with 3,187 MW, only 91 MW of additional capacity came on line last year (not subtracting for replaced capacity).
