McKinsey & Company: PV becoming viable without subsidies across a range of conditions

McKinsey & Company (New York, New York, U.S.) has released a report which predicts that despite current troubles, falling prices will cause dramatic growth in the global solar photovoltaic PV industry within the next decade, even as subsidies disappear. "Solar Power: Darkest Before Dawn" estimates that the amount of PV that could be operated at a lower cost than competing sources could exceed 1,000 GW by 2020, with system costs potentially declining to USD 1/watt. The company states that even if system costs fall to only USD 2/watt, the industry is still likely to install an additional 400 GW to 600 GW of capacity by 2020. Read more

LADWP approves CLEAN LA program to support PV generation

On April 17th, 2012, The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP, Los Angeles, California, U.S.) Board of Commissioners approved a 10 MW pilot program to support solar photovoltaic (PV) generation. While the LADWP calls the CLEAN LA program a feed-in tariff (FiT), however program is not a FiT on the European model, but instead a competitive solicitation program. CLEAN LA was previously approved by the Los Angeles City Council, which gave the LADWP the ability to enter into long-term standard contracts for the program. Read more

Quanta chosen as EPC contractor for 70 MW of PV plants in Southern California

On April 18th, 2012, Quanta Power Generation Inc. (Houston, Texas, U.S.) announced that it has been chosen by GCL Solar Energy Inc. (San Francisco, California, U.S.) to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants totaling 70 MW-AC in Southern California. Quanta will supply design and EPC services for the 50 MW-AC Alpaugh PV plant and the 20 MW-AC Alpaugh North Project, both of which it plans to complete by the end of 2012. The PV plants will use 324,000 GCL solar PV modules equipped with trackers, and cover more than 200 hectares. Read more

France drafts rules for 10% FIT bonus for PV products made in Europe

The French Department of Ecology for Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing has drafted a rule to create a 10% bonus to the nation's feed-in tariff (FIT) for use of solar photovoltaic (PV) components produced in the European Economic Area (EEA). The proposed regulation was scheduled to be sent to the nation's Supreme Council of Energy on April 18th, 2012. Analysts at Tecsol (Perpignan, France) have speculated that the rule could be published before the first round of the presidential election. Read more

SPI Solar enters purchase agreement with Thermi-Taneo for 7.4MW of PV projects

SPI Solar recently entered a purchase agreement with the Greek Thermi-Taneo Venture Capital Fund. Thermi-Taneo will acquire three PV projects in the Evros region totalling 7.4MW from SPI. The purchase includes the permits to construct the PV plants as well as the land lease. Further, SPI will act as the EPC contractor for the 7.4MW PV projects, which are expected to complete construction in late 2012. Read more

Panasonic has launched an ambitious project: Eclipse live from Fujiyama by solar power. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of renewable energies. On May 20, the company will broadcast the solar eclipse live from Mount Fujiyama and stream the broadcast online. KREDL awards contracts for 80 MW of PV, CSP through Karnataka Solar Policy

(KREDL, Bangalore, India) has allocated the first 80 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) projects through the Karnataka Solar Policy, following a delay due to legal complications. Contracts for 20 MW of CSP and 60 MW of PV projects were awarded in this first round of bidding. The lowest bid came in at INR 7.94/kWh (USD 0.152/kWh) by Helena Power Pvt. Ltd. for a 10 MW PV plant and the highest successful bid at INR 8.50/kWh (USD 1.63/kWh) by Welspun Solar AP Pvt. Ltd. for a 7 MW PV plant. Read more

Gujarat holds ceremony to dedicate 600 MW of solar plants

On April 19th, 2012, the state of Gujarat held a ceremony to dedicate 600 MW of solar plants commissioned in the last year, including 214 MW at the multi-developer Gujarat Solar Park. The ceremony was led by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Over the previous two years, Gujarat has signed 968.5 MW of solar projects to its Gujarat Solar Policy. The state has emerged as a national leader in both policy and solar market development, similar to the position of California in the United States. Read more
