Gehrlicher Solar, Masdar PV build 7.7-kW showcase building integrated photovoltaic system with 5.7 square meter modules

On February 21st, 2012, Gehrlicher Solar AG (Dornach near Munich; Germany) and Masdar PV (Ichtershausen, Germany) announced the completion of a 7.7 kilowatt (kW) rooftop PV installation on a 19th century barn in Belgium. The project has been carried out for InnoVent, a French-based company. The solar array uses 5.7m² thin-film solar modules from Masdar PV and is the second of its kind with modules of this size used as roof elements. Read more

U.S. BLM releases draft plan to identify areas for solar, wind development in Arizona

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released a draft plan for an initiative to identify lands across Arizona which are most suitable for wind and solar projects. The BLM says the Restoration Design Energy Project (RDEP) focuses on areas that are previously disturbed or have low natural and cultural resource conflicts. The publication of the RDEP on February 16th, 2012 marked the beginning of a 90-day public comment period on the plan's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Read more

National University, SPG Solar complete 858 kW solar PV carport

On February 21st, 2012, National University (La Jolla, California, U.S.) announced the completion of an 852 kilowatt (kW) solar power project at two campuses in San Diego, California. The solar project was installed by SPG Solar Inc. (Tucson, Arizona, U.S.). The two rooftop solar installations include more than 3,000 solar panels located at the Spectrum Business Park Campus and a solar carport system spanning three parking locations at the Technology and Health Sciences Center in Kearny Mesa. Arizona Public Service tests 1.5 MWh on-grid energy storage system

On February 23rd, 2012 Arizona Public Service Company (APS, Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.) announced that it has begun testing a new 1.5 MWh energy storage system to assess the benefits of grid energy storage, including support of solar generation. Electrovaya Inc. (Mississauga, Canada) supplied the lithium ion battery-based energy storage system, and partnered with ABB to provide power conditioning and conversion equipment for the system. During 2012 the system will reside in an electrical distribution substation, and will be moved to support a 500 kW PV plant at a later date. Read more

USD 8 billion invested in renewable energy in Washington State, U.S.

On February 21st, 2012, Renewable Northwest Project, a regional nonprofit advocacy group, has released a report stating that capital investment to date in Washington wind, solar, geothermal and biomass has exceeded USD 7.9 billion. ?This is a pivotal time for economic recovery and environmental protection, and Washington?s renewable energy resources are delivering the solutions we need,? stated Rachel Shimshak, executive director at Renewable Northwest Project.
