First Solar names Johan Cilliers as regional director for sub-Saharan Africa

First Solar Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, U.S.) announced that it has named Johan Cilliers as regional director of business development for sub-Saharan Africa and managing director of its new South Africa operating subsidiary. Cilliers will be based in First Solar's newly established office in Cape Town, South Africa. He will report to Christopher Burghardt, vice president of business development for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Read more

"Microsolar" CIGS producer Pioneer PV launches operations

On December 4th, 2012 Pioneer PV Solutions (Los Angeles, California, U.S.) launched operations. The company plans to provide solutions to the market for solar photovoltaic (PV) applications up to 40 watts, using copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film PV technology. Pioneer markets its products for rechargeable and DC power applications. The company states that despite advances in technology, the "microsolar" market, which includes emerging markets for solar lighting solutions in the developing world, remains under-served. BLM issues final Environmental Impact Statement for Chocolate Mountains Renewable Energy Zone

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that it has issued its final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) Plan Amendment to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with identifying sites on certain BLM-managed surface lands as suitable for authorization of rights-of-way (ROW) for testing and developing solar and wind energy facilities.
