NSP and DelSolar Merger is Good for the Taiwanese Solar Cell Industry

The merger between two of Taiwan's leading solar cell makers NSP and DelSolar is not just a good move for the two firms but also a positive sign that consolidation is finally happening in Taiwan's solar industry. This according to M.J. Wang, an analyst for the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center, a branch of Taiwan's leading research center, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). AE-AMD, Tenesol begin work on 33 MW of PV projects in South Africa

Joint venture AE-AMD Renewable Energy and Tenesol SA (La Tour de Salvagny, France) have announced two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 33 MW in South Africa's Northern Cape Province. Tenesol has begun construction of the 22 MW Herbert plant, and will hold a groundbreaking for the 11 MW Greefspan project in coming weeks. Both are part of South Africa's Independent Power Producers Procurement Program, and completion of both is expected for the second quarter of 2014. Read more

Which? survey reveals feed-in tariff payment woes

Soitec opens CPV factory in San Diego

On December 19th, 2012 Soitec SA (Bernin, France) held the grand opening of its concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) manufacturing facility in San Diego, California. The first phase of the factory's production line is now operational, and produced its first CPV module in October 2012. The first phase can produce 140 MW of CPV modules annually, and the factory is designed for a production capacity of 280 MW. Read more

Lux Research identifies Silevo among top emerging technology companies

Lux Research (Boston, Massachusetts, US) has identified Silevo Inc. (Fremont, California, US) in a list of the top 10 emerging technology companies to watch for in 2013. Lux cites the company's high efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, efficiency roadmap and competitive cost structure, giving the company a "positive" rating. Read more

50 MW of Solarcentury solar PV projects approved

Councils in the English counties of Norfolk and Suffolk have voted to approve four solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 50 MW planned by Solar Century Holdings Ltd. (London, UK). On December 17th, 2012 Breckland Council in Norfolk voted to approve 38 MW at three sites, and Waveney Council in Suffolk has also voted to approve a 12.3 MW PV plant near Halesworth. Solarcentury plans to develop, design, build, operate and maintain PV plants at these four sites. Read more

OPEL Technologies completes sale of solar tracker business to NSM

OPEL Technologies Inc. (Toronto, Canada) has completed the sale of assets through its solar tracker division to Northern States Metals (NSM, West Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.) for USD 1 million. This follows final acceptance from the TSX Venture Exchange for the sale. OPEL and NSM entered into an agreement for the sale on December 14th, 2012. Read more

On December 19th, 2012, China's Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the executive meeting of the State Council to determine government policies for promoting the development of the nation's solar photovoltaic (PV) industry. The meeting indicated that China's PV industry is facing a serious excess of production capacity, heavily dependence on foreign demand, and PV companies across the board competing to maintaining operations. JinkoSolar, Jinchuan Group to build 200 MW Solar PV project in China's Gansu Province

JinkoSolar Holding Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jinchuan Group Company Ltd. (Jinchang, China) to jointly develop a 200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Jinchang in China's Gansu Province. The USD 320 million project has been approved by Gansu Development and Reform Commission and is expected to be completed and connected to the grid by June 2013. Read more

Boards of NSP, DelSolar approve merger

On December 19th, 2012 the boards of Neo Solar Power Corporation (Hsinchu City, Taiwan) and DelSolar Company Ltd. (Chunan Chen, Taiwan) each approved the second-stage merger of the two companies through a 100% share swap. Both NSP and DelSolar will hold extraordinary shareholders' meetings on February 6th, 2013 to approve the merger proposal. The merger is still subject to regulatory approval, and closing date of the merger is tentatively set for May 31st, 2013. Read more

US solar PV cell, module imports fall 2/3 year-over-year

The value of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules imported into the United States from China dropped to USD 75 million in October 2012 from USD 213 million in October 2011. October's import levels also represent a 33% sequential decline in value from USD 113 million in September 2012. The Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing (CASM) credits the imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on such imports for this decline. Read more
