Softbank Group (Tokyo, Japan) and subsidiaries Softbank Mobile and SB Energy have launched a new project to use the roofs of residential properties to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and sell the electricity generated to utilities. Softbank will begin taking applications to participate in "House Energy Project" on December 21st, 2012, and will limit the project to the first 1,000 qualifying applicants. Softbank states that users may also receive compensation, including discounts on both Softbank mobile phone and internet plans. Lux Research Inc. (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) has released a new report which predicts that solar photovoltaic (PV) module production costs will fall to as low as USD 0.48 per watt in 2017. "Module Cost Structure Update: Path to Profitability" notes that module prices have fallen sharply over the last four years to a low of USD 0.70 per watt, but that production costs have not fallen as much. Scheuten Solar (Venlo, the Netherlands) has built a solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system for a new branch of supermarket Lidl in Weert (the Netherlands). 290 PV modules produce enough electricity to supply 20 households, the company states. The supermarket was officially opened on November 28th, 2012. The solar panels provide power to all cooling and freezing installations in the branch. PV Evolution Labs LLC (Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.) has provided certification that Trina's modules do not suffer from PID, as the second PID certificate which the modules have received. On December 13th, 2012 Panasonic Corporation (Osaka, Japan) began manufacturing its HIT solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules at its new facility in the state of Kedah, Malaysia. The new factory in Kulim Hi-Tech Park will be Panasonic's first fully integrated facility, producing silicon wafers, PV cells and modules, and will have an annual production capacity of 300 MW. On December 13th, 2012 PV Crystalox Solar plc (Abingdon, UK) announced that it will discontinue its polysilicon production facility in Bitterfeld, Germany, as well as "substantially" reducing output at its UK ingot and German silicon wafer plants. PV Crystalox says that these changes are part of a "radical" restructuring, which will retaining core production capabilities and return excess cash to shareholders. The company aims to align with anticipated short-term market demand so that the business will be roughly cash neutral in 2013. The city of Burbank, California has approved a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sempra U.S. Gas & Power (San Diego, California, US) for 40 MW of electricity from the Copper Mountain Solar 3 project to be built in the US state of Nevada. This follows Los Angeles Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa's signing of a PPA for his city to buy the first 210 MW of power from the project.
