Advanced Energy supplies inverters for 2-MW PV plant in Oregon

On December 11th, 2012, Advanced Energy Industries Inc. (AE, Fort Collins, Colorado, U.S.) announced that it has supplied its utility-scale AE 500NX inverters for the two megawatt (MW) Black Cap solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Lakeview, Oregon. The Black Cap plant is Oregon's first utility-scale solar PV project and is also the largest utility-owned and operated solar energy site in the state. Read more

SunPower installs 1.5 MW PV plant on Evergreen Valley College campus

On December 10th, 2012, SunPower Corp. (San Jose, California, U.S.) announced that it has installed a 1.5-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant on Evergreen Valley College campus in San Jose, California. "This SunPower solar electric system is expected to generate the equivalent of one-third of the campus' electricity demand for the next 25 years, delivering over USD 12 million in savings," Evergreen Valley College President Henry Yong stated. On December 11th, 2012 China's Ministry of Commerce announced that it will allocate USD 1.1 billion to support a new round of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects under the nation's Golden Sun Program. This is in addition to USD 960 million that the government allocated to projects in the first half of 2012. Dozens of companies have been identified to develop 2.83 GW of projects in 33 provinces under this new round, with Yingli Green Energy Holding Company (Baoding, China) taking the largest share at 288 MW of projects in multiple provinces. SolarCity raises USD 92 million through IPO after reducing share price

US Universities find that wind, solar combined with storage can power large grids 99.9% of the time

A team from the University of Delaware (UD, Newark, Delaware, US) and Delaware Technical Community College (Georgetown, Delaware, US) has published research which finds that by 2030, solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines could power a large electrical grid 99.9% of the time at overall costs comparable to today's electricity prices. The system modeled by the universities is based on a combination of wind power, solar power, battery storage and fuel cells, which they say would nearly always exceed electricity demands while keeping costs low. Italian solar PV power production increases by 76% compared to 2011

National grid operator Terna has released figures for Italian electricity production and demand for November 2012, reporting that solar photovoltaic (PV) power production fell to 3.2% of demand during the month. Italian PV plants produced 831 GWh of electricity, a 3.7% increase over November 2011. In the first 11 months of 2012, PV supplied 17.6 TWh, a 76% increase over the prior year, meeting 5.9% of electricity demand. Read more

Frost & Sullivan: Asia-Pacific solar markets to reach USD 11.1 billion by 2016

Frost & Sullivan (Mountain View, California, U.S.) has released a report, "Solar Power Markets in Asia-Pacific", which finds that the value of these markets reached USD 7.6 billion in 2011. The report further predicts that the value of these markets will reach USD 11.1 billion annually by 2016. Frost & Sullivan cites the launch of feed-in tariff policies in many of these nations, and states that Japan is expected to be the leading market through 2016. The report also finds that US and European solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers are beginning to show interest in the region. Read more

JinkoSolar to supply PV modules for 81 MW plant in South Africa

JinkoSolar Holding Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) has signed a contract to with WBHO-Building Energy Pty. Ltd. (WBHO, Johannesburg, South Africa) to supply solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for an 81 MW PV plant in Northern Cape Province, South Africa. WBHO will develop, design, construct and commission the project, as one of the first approved under South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program. Read more
