Suntech to supply 100 MW of PV modules to South African PV plants

Suntech Power Holdings Company Ltd. (Wuxi, China) has announced that it will supply 100 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for two PV projects to be built in South Africa. Mainstream Renewable Power (Dublin, Ireland) leads the consortium which is building the plants at two separate sites in South Africa's Northern Cape region. Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) will design and construct the plants, and plans to commission the two by mid-2014. Read more

Report: Residential Solar PV Installations Hit All-Time High in Q3 of 2012

Residential installations of solar PV hit a record high in the third quarter of 2012, according to a new report published by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The US Solar Market Insight: Third Quarter 2012 reports that more than 118 MW of solar PV capacity was added to the United States residential sector in Q3, a growth of 12 percent since last quarter and the strongest showing ever in a single quarter. Bridge to India: Tamil Nadu solar tariffs to fall to USD 0.11/kWh

Bridge to India (New Delhi, India) has released a new policy brief that predicts that tariffs will fall to INR 6.2/kWh (USD 0.11/kWh) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu's newly opened round of competitive bidding for solar electric projects. This would be the lowest tariff yet seen in the Indian market, lower than the INR 7/kWh (USD 0.13/kWh) tariff for PV projects allocated by the Indian state of Odisha. The Tamil Nadu Solar Policy aims to have an installed capacity of 3 GW by 2015, of which 1.5 GW will be utility-scale solar. Read more

STX Solar to build 45 MW PV plant in Sendai, Japan

Sharp achieves 37.7% efficient solar PV cell at standard sunlight concentration

Sharp Corporation (Osaka, Japan) has produced a 37.7% efficient solar photovoltaic (PV) cell based on triple-junction technology, as verified by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Tokyo, Japan). This is the world's highest conversion efficiency for a PV cell at a concentration of one sun. Hanwha SolarOne Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) has announced an agreement to supply 155 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for two PV projects totaling 155 MW in South Africa. The Cobra Group (Madrid, Spain), Gransolar (Madrid, Spain) and Kensani Capital (Johannesburg, South Africa) will develop the Letsatsi and Lesedi Projects, which were selected in the first round of the nation's Renewable Energy Indepdendent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP). Los Angeles to buy up to 460 MW of power from two solar PV projects

On December 6th, 2012 Los Angeles Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) on behalf of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) for up to 460 MW of electricity from two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in the U.S. state of Nevada. This includes a PPA for electricity from the 250 MW K Road Moapa Solar PV plant, which will be built on Native American land. Under the second PPA, LADWP will buy power from Sempra U.S. Gas & Power LLC's (San Diego, California, US) Copper Mountain Solar 3 project near Boulder, Nevada. Read more

Azur Space produces 42.3% efficient triple-junction solar PV cell

Azur Space Solar Power GmbH (Heilbronn, Germany) reports reaching 42.3% cell efficiency under a concentration of 500 suns with its triple-junction photovoltaic (PV) technology. The 3 mm cells which achieved this efficiency were grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on germanium substrates. The cell's three layers were comprised of gallium-indium-phosphorous, gallium-indium-arsenic and germanium. Read more
