EC begins investigation of Chinese subsidies for PV exports

The European Commission (EC) has launched a countervailing duty (CVD) investigation into Chinese government support for solar photovoltaic (PV) products intended for export, according to trade group EU ProSun. The trade group petitioned for the investigation on September 25th, 2012, following the launch of an EC investigation into alleged dumping initiated on September 6th, 2012. The investigation also comes one day after the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) confirmed anti-dumping and CVD tariffs on Chinese-made PV products. Read more

US trade commission approves Chinese anti-dumping measures

Conergy wins EPC contract for two Thai PV plants

German PV project developer Conergy is set to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia after it secured an EPC contract for two PV plants in Thailand from Thai Solar Energy Company Limited (TSE), a local investor. The plants will be located in Suphanburi Province and Kanchanaburi Province and have a combined capacity of 21MW. Read more

Enphase revenues grow in 3Q 2012, with first U.K. PV inverter shipments

Enphase Energy Inc. (Petaluma, California, U.S.) has released results for the third quarter of 2012, reporting a 36% year-over-year increase in revenues to USD 60.8 million, a -13% operating margin, and a net loss of USD 8.9 million. Enphase shipped 431,000 micro-inverters during the quarter, enough to accompany 92.4 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, including its first shipments to the United Kingdom. The company notes the introduction of new products during the quarter, as well a new program to offer training and resources to commercial installers. Read more

Japanese consortium holds groundbreaking ceremony for 50 MW PV plant in Japan

On November 7th, 2012, a consortium of seven companies led by Mitsui & Company Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) held a groundbreaking for a combined 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and 6 MW wind project in Aichi Prefecture in central Japan. The companies plan to begin construction of the USD 230 million project "shortly", and plan to commission the plants by October 2014. Mitsui and two subsidiaries together will provide 60% of the investment in the project. Read more

U.S. International Trade Commission upholds tariffs on Chinese PV products

On November 7th, 2012 the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) unanimously confirmed the imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties between 24% and 255% on imports of crystalline silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) cells from China, and modules made from those cells. The ITC also approved the application of critical circumstances, meaning that tariffs will be retroactive from the date of preliminary decisions. The trade case, initiated through a petition filed by SolarWorld AG's (Bonn, Germany) U.S. subsidiary, has divided the U.S. and global solar industry. Read more

Island territory in South Pacific now entirely powered by PV

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the third and final solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, to total 1 MW, has been completed on the island territory of Tokelau. The three plants are expected to meet 150% of Tokelau's electricity needs on its three atolls, and include the use of battery storage. Powersmart Solar (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand) built and commissioned the three plants. Read more

Phoenix Solar revenues collapse in 3Q 2012

Phoenix Solar AG (Sulzemoos, Germany) has released financial results for the third quarter of 2012, reporting a 63% year-over-year decline in revenues to EUR 40.8 million (USD 52.0 million), led by a 71% decline in its Components & Systems segment. These declines were not confined to the quarter, and over the first nine months of 2012 revenues fell 51% to EUR 125 million (USD 159 million), with a -15% operating margin. This is mostly the result of a decline in its German business, which fell to 28% of sales over this period. Read more
