On November 15th, 2012, DEGERenergie GmbH (Horb am Neckar, Germany) announced that it has delivered its tracking systems for two 150 kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants in Bosnia. China Sunergy to supply 7 MW of solar modules for residential projects in the Netherlands

On November 15th, 2012, China Sunergy Co. Ltd. (Nanjing, China) announced that it has signed a solar photovoltaic (PV) modules supply agreement with Oskomera Solar Power Solutions BV (OSPS). Under the agreement, China Sunergy will ship up to 7 megawatts (MW) of polycrystalline PV modules to Oskomera Solar Power for residential roof-top projects in the Netherlands, covering 2,500 Dutch households. Suntech cuts back production at Arizona factory to 15 MW annually

Suntech Power Holdings Company Ltd. (Wuxi, China) has announced that it will stop two of three production shifts and reduce its workforce at its solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing facility in the U.S. state of Arizona. Production will decline from 45 MW annually to 15 MW, with fifty positions eliminated at factory in Goodyear, Arizona. Suntech states that this is in line with its global restructuring efforts, but also blames the impacts of multiple U.S. tariffs. Read more

Australia to slash incentives for PV

On November 16th, 2012 the Federal Government of Australia announced that it will end its solar credits mechanism six months ahead of schedule on January 1st, 2013, which will bring solar photovoltaics (PV) down to one STC per MWh under the Renewable Energy Target system. The government states that the early phase-out of the program will lower the impact of PV on retail electricity costs. The nation's Clean Energy Council and Solar Energy Council have both condemned the timing of the change. Read more

Flemish PV market falls to 246 MW in 2012

Flemish electricity and gas regulator VREG (Brussels, Belgium) has released information on 2012 installed capacities for various renewable energy sources under the nation's green certificate program. VREG finds that new 2012 solar photovoltaic (PV) installations supported by the program fell roughly 2/3 from 2011 levels to 246 MW, bringing the region to a cumulative installed capacity of 1.94 GW. Concentrating solar power in Morocco: KfW to loan EUR 100 million to MASEN to build 160 MW CSP plant

On November 19th, 2012 German development bank KfW (Frankfurt, Germany) signed an agreement to loan EUR 100 million (USD 128 million) to the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN) to support the building of a 160 MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant in Morocco. The 160 MW CSP plant will be the first of several solar plants at the site in Ouarzazate, to total 500 MW. KfW made this loan on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which will join a number of other government agencies and development banks in multiple nations in supporting the project. CERC cites the falling prices of PV modules as a factor in the change. Bridge to India (New Delhi, India) notes that this will lead to a reduction in REC floor prices, and warns that this may have negative consequences for the REC market and solar project developers. (Baoding, China) has released selected preliminary financial results for the third quarter of 2012, estimating that module shipments fell 17% sequentially, with a gross margin between -22% and -24%. This collapse in gross margin will be largely due to inventory provision and depreciation expenses related to underutilized capacity. However, Yingli has also predicted that it will be able to bring its non-silicon processing cost to below USD 0.50 per watt by the end of 2012. Read more

Applied Materials EES revenues fall further, as incoming orders bounce back

Applied Materials Inc. (Santa Clara, California, U.S.) has released results for its latest financial quarter, reporting a decline in sales to USD 62 million and an operating loss of USD 480 million in its Energy and Environmental Services (EES) division. This loss was largely due to a USD 421 million goodwill impairment charge, and Applied also reported USD 65 million in new orders in the division, nearly double the level of the previous quarter. Across all of its divisions the company fared better, with a 25% year-over-year fall in sales to USD 1.65 billion, a -30% operating margin, and a net loss of USD 515 million. Read more
