Mitsui to build 23 MW PV plant in Hokkaido

On October 29th, 2012, Mitsui Fudosan Company Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) announced that it will build a 23 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The company plans to start construction on the plant in Tomakomai (Hokkaido, Japan) in November 2012, with commissioning scheduled for 2013. Electricity from the 37 hectare plant will be sold to Hokkaido Electric Power Company (Sapporo, Japan) under a 20-year contract. Read more

Power-One revenues increase to USD 284 million in 3Q 2012; inverter shipments driven by PV installations in North America and Asia-Pacific

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, California, U.S.) has released financial results for the third quarter of 2012, reporting a 16% year-over-year increase in revenues to USD 284 million, an operating margin of 15% and a net income of USD 21.1 million. While Power-One's Renewable Energy Solutions division increased to USD 216 million in revenues, its Power Solutions division revenues fell to USD 67 million. The board of directors of Power-One has additionally approved a share repurchase program. Read more

Concentrating solar power: Aalborg's 650 tons CSP steam generator system is ready for installation on site in Rajasthan, India

In mid-October 2012, the steam generator system for the 50 MW Godawari concentrating solar power (CSP) Project, delivered by Aalborg CSP & Sojitz Corporation (Aalborg, Denmark), was handed over to the EPC company Lauren CCL Engineers Pvt. Ltd., that is constructing the plant. With the delivery of the steam generator system, the solar project has reached an important milestone towards completion of the plant. The CSP plant located in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan in India is expected to start commercial operation in spring 2013 and is expected to generate 130 GWh annually. Read more

GT Advanced Technologies to restructure, lay off 25% of workforce; Company expects solar market to recover over the long term

GT Advanced Technologies (Merrimack, New Hampshire, U.S.) has announced that it will restructure its operations, including consolidating its three business units into a single group and reducing global staffing levels by 25%. The company states that these measures will reduce its annual expenses by roughly USD 13 million, and allow it to better align its cost structure with current market conditions. GT also revealed that its revenue for the third quarter of 2012 will be at the low end of its previous guidance of between USD 110 and 140 million. Read more

Singulus to lay off 40% of workers at subsidiary Singulus Stangl Solar GmbH's Fürstenfeldbruck site

Singulus Technologies AG (Kahl am Main, Germany) has released preliminary results for the first nine months of 2012, stating that it expects a 31% year-over year decline in revenues to EUR 83.5 million (USD 108 million) and a negative result of EUR 10.9 million (USD 14.1 million). As a result of this decline, Singulus has announced restructuring measures including laying off 40% of the workers at the Fürstenfeldbruck site of subsidiary Singulus Stangl Solar GmbH (Fürstenfeldbruck, Germany) at the end of 2012. Singulus will also adjust structures and capacities in its wet-chemical divisions as well as capitalized development expenses for solar coating technology. Read more

T-Solar completes 44 MW of PV in Southern Peru

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has attended the inauguration of two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants totaling 44 MW built by the T-Solar Group (Madrid, Spain) in the Arequipa region of Southern Peru. The Distribution (Repartición) and Majes PV plants comprise T-Solar amorphous silicon thin-film PV modules. EDF holds dedication ceremony for Catalina Solar PV project in Southern California
