1.3 MW PV plant built at North Carolina wastewater treatment plant

On December 30th, 2011, Progress Energy (Raleigh, North Carolina, US) announced the completion of a 1.3 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) array at the City of Raleigh's Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Southern Energy Management designed, engineered and constructed the solar photovoltaic array, which is expected to generate about 1.7 million kWh of electricity per year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,300 tons annually. Leo Motors to supply e-Box storage systems for social housing in Congo

On January 5th, 2012 Leo Motors Inc. (Hanam City, South Korea) announced that it has signed a contract with PDI World Group LLC (Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.) to supply its e-Box electricity storage systems to accompany solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation at social housing developments in the Republic of Congo. Leo Motors will supply 20,000 e-Box units under the USD 100 million contract. PDI is involved in a social housing project in Congo for 300,000 homes, and plans to supply electricity storage for as many of these as possible. Read more

TerniEnergia completes three PV plants in Italy totaling 5.8 MW in 4Q 2011

On January 4th, 2012, TerniEnergia SpA (Narni, Italy) announced the completion of three new solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Italy with a total capacity of 5.8 MW in the fourth quarter of 2011, bringing its overall for 2011 to 41 PV plants with a total capacity of 75.5 MW. The plants are located in the regions of Marche, Puglia and the island of Sicily. The company also states that it is currently completing a 4.8 MW PV plant in Greece. Read more

PV generation in Australia: Victoria implements transitional feed-in tariff

On January 1st, 2012 the Australian state of Victoria implemented a "transitional" feed-in tariff for solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, while it reviews its feed-in tariff program. Through the transitional program, owners of PV systems 5 kW or smaller are eligible to receive USD 0.25 / kWh for excess electricity fed into the grid. The transitional program will have a cap of 75 MW, and will provide solar customers with guaranteed credits until the end of 2016. The state closed its "premium" feed-in tariff program at the end of September 30th, 2011, which paid a rate of USD 0.61 / kWh. Read more

Power-One to install inverters to accompany 25 MW PV plant in Gujarat, India

On January 5th, 2012 Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, California, U.S.) announced that it has installed its central inverters at a 25 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in the Indian state of Gujarat. Power-One has supplied 73 Aurora PVI-330.0-TL inverters for the plant, as well as medium-voltage switch gears and transformers. The company expects that the PV plant will be completed in a "few weeks". Read more

PV module production: Chinese Tier 2 manufacturers' capacity utilization fell to record low in Q4?11; many suppliers closed down production lines or suspended production entirely

The average production capacity utilization rate of Chinese Tier 2 crystalline photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturers fell to just 35% in Q4?11 according to the latest quarterly report from IMS Research (Wellingborough, UK) - and it is forecast to fall even lower in Q1?12. As a result of high inventory levels and a weak outlook for demand in 2012, many suppliers closed down production lines, or suspended production entirely, resulting in utilization falling to the lowest level IMS Research has recorded. This is a sharp contrast to a year ago, when utilization rates of these suppliers hit 80% in Q4?10. Read more

Skyline Solar awarded US$1.85 million contract from US Department of Defense

Skyline Solar, a manufacturer of solar CPV arrays for the commercial, industrial, government and utility markets, has won a US$1.85 million contract from the US Department of Defense (DoD) and has since broken ground on the construction of Skyline Solar X14 CPV power plants at two domestic military sites. New Report on large-scale PV power plants: 2,400 installations worldwide; significant decrease in costs

In 2010, more than 2,400 large-scale PV plants (> 200 kWp) were constructed and put into service worldwide, more than ever before, Solar Server's partner website pvresources.com reports. In Italy more than 1,400 PV power plants were put into service, followed by Germany with about 400 PV power plants. The German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar, Berlin, Germany) reports that the nation's solar industry registered an unusually strong PV demand at the end of 2011, significantly contributing to the energy turnaround. According to PV industry figures, after a weak first half of 2011 PV investment increased significantly. Austin Energy inaugurates 30MW Webberville solar plant

Germany sets new solar installation record of 7.5GW on late year surge

CSP pioneer, former Luz International Chairman Newton Becker dies at the age of 83

On January 2nd, 2012 concentrating solar power (CSP) pioneer Newton Becker died in Los Angeles at the age of 83. Becker was a founding investor and Chairman of the Board of Luz International Ltd., which built the world's first commercial-scale CSP plants, the Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) in California's Mojave Desert. Luz completed nine SEGS totaling 354 MW between 1984-1991, before filing for bankruptcy in 1991, following its failure to secure financing for its tenth CSP plant. However, the experience of Luz has been incorporated by CSP developer BrightSource Energy Inc. (Oakland, California, U.S.). Read more

Austin Energy (Austin, Texas, U.S.) has announced that it commissioned the 30 MW Webberville solar photovoltaic (PV) plant near Austin, Texas in late December 2011. The plant is the largest PV plant at any public power utility in the United States, and the largest PV plant in Texas. The Webberville plant is comprised of 127,000 PV modules mounted on single-axis trackers covering 1.54 square kilometers. Read more
