ONYX to break up 22 MW PV project in Honduras into smaller plants

On December 29th, 2011 ONYX Service & Solutions Inc. (Greenwood Village, Colorado, U.S.) announced a new plan to break up its 22 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project on the island of Roatan, Honduras, into several small PV plants. The company cites the older electricity distribution system on the island as a factor in the formulation of this plan. ONYX states that it plans to use a repository system for the larger PV plants and may decide to utilize its new "Plug-N-Play" PV module for smaller output areas. Read more

SunPower completes 3.8MW of solar power systems for water agencies in California

SunPower advised that it had completed four solar power systems, totaling 3.8MW, for public water agencies and water treatment facilities in California. Two of the systems will serve Rancho California Water District (RCWD) in Riverside County. The first RCWD system is 1.1MW and located at the Senga Dohety Pump Station using SunPower?s T0 Tracker. Additionally a 612kW solar parking canopy system was installed at the RCWD headquarters. The RCWD installations join SunPower?s 2008 1.1MW system that was completed for the utilities Santa Rosa Water Reclamation Facility. Read more

U.S. Interior Department approves transmission for Centinela Solar PV project

On December 29th, 2011 the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) announced that it has approved a transmission right-of-way for the 275 MW Centinela Solar Energy Project, a photovoltaic (PV) plant under development near El Centro, California. Interior Department approval comes two days after Imperial County, California approved of a conditional use permit for the construction of the plant. Concurrently, the agency also approved transmission for a 104 MW wind plant in Oregon. Read more

BYD completes 36MWh energy storage solution to accompany wind, solar generation in Hebei Province, China

On December 30th, 2011 BYD Company Ltd. (Shenzhen, China) and the State Grid Corporation of China (Beijing, China) announced that they have completed construction on 36 MWh of energy storage to accompany 100 MW of wind and 40 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, China. The companies estimate that there are no energy storage systems to accompany renewable energy generation of this scale in operation anywhere in the world. The USD 500 million project uses iron-phosphate battery technology, as well as BYD charge and discharge technology. Read more

U.K. DECC: Renewable energy to give USD 3.8 billion boost to economy

On December 29th, 2011 the U.K.'s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) released research which shows that in 2011 companies have announced plans for nearly GBP 2.5 billion (USD 3.8 billion) worth of investment in renewable energy projects in the nation. In a separate report to the European Commission, the DECC showed that the U.K. has achieved a 27% increase in renewable energy consumption to 54 TWh in 2010, or 3.3% of total energy consumed. MIT announces new book to identify strategies needed to drive energy innovation

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.) has announced a new book which identifies the policy and investment strategies which it says are needed to drive the innovation necessary to transform the U.S. energy system. "Unlocking Energy Innovation" by MIT Professor Richard Lester and George Mason University Professor David Hart concludes that fundamental changes are needed in the U.S. energy-innovation system, which they say does not address the needs of innovation. EurObserv'ER estimates EU-27 renewable energy share at 12.4% in 2010

EurObserv?ER at the end of December 2011 published first estimates of the renewable energy share of gross final energy consumption for the European Union (EU) Member States in 2010. In 2010 the renewable energy share (RES) accounts for 12.4% of overall gross final energy consumption, as against 11.5% in 2009, which amounts to a 0.9-point year-on-year increase compared to 2009.
