The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP, Los Angeles, California, U.S.) is reporting a robust response to its Solar Incentive Program, which it re-opened on September 1st, 2011. The public utility reports that as of 8:00 AM on September 6th, 2011, it had received 112 applications for over USD 7.4 million in incentives to build 3.25 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants on Los Angeles rooftops. Yingli, ECN, Amtech research collaboration yields 19.7% PV cell efficiencies

On September 7th, 2011 Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Ltd. (Baoding, China) announced that a research collaboration it is a participant in has achieved solar photovoltaic (PV) cell efficiencies of 19.7% and module efficiencies of 17.6% under laboratory conditions. The collaboration with the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands (ECN, Petten, The Netherlands), and Amtech Systems Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, U.S.) focuses on N-type metal wrap through (MWT) PV cell and module technology, and is an extension of Yingli's project PANDA. Read more

DOE finalizes $90.6M loan guarantee for 30MW Alamosa solar power plant, featuring Amonix CPV systems

The US Department of Energy has finalized another loan guarantee, this time for $90.6 million to Cogentrix for the 30MW Alamosa Solar Generating Project, which uses Amonix high-concentration PV dual-axis tracker systems. U.S. selects Carmanah's infrared solar-powered lights for deployment on Middle East runways

On September 7th, 2011, Carmanah Technologies Corp. (Victoria, British Columbia) announced that the United States Government is deploying its more than 300 solar-powered A702 infrared lights to undisclosed locations in the Middle East. The company has received an order valued at about USD 400,000 from the U.S. Government for the A702 IR lights, which are primarily used for temporary and permanent runway edge, threshold, obstruction and helipad lighting. Constellation Energy introduces residential solar PV lease program

Concentrating solar power: Siemens to supply solar field for 50 MW CSP plant in Andalusia

On September 8th, 2011, Siemens Energy (Erlangen, Germany) announced that it has received an order from Ecolaire España SA (Madrid, Spain) to supply a solar field for a 50 MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant in Andalusia, Spain. The Arenales plant, located near Morón de la Frontera, will utilize parabolic trough CSP technology. Ecolaire España expects to commission the plant in 2013. Read more

SolarWorld establishes joint venture for PV module recycling

On September 9th, 2011, SolarWorld AG (Bonn, Germany) announced that it has established a joint venture for the production of metal products and other materials from recycled solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. Preiss-Daimler Chemical Park and other, un-named companies have joined SolarWorld in establishing SolarCycle GmbH. Headquarters for the new company will be located in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany. DEGERenergie trackers chosen for 2MW solar portfolio in Sicily

DEGERenergie has won a contract to supply two new solar parks in Italy with its DEGERtrakers 6000NT. Installation of the two systems, located in the province of Enna in Sicily and with a combined capacity of 2MW, is already underway and when completed they will be equipped with 7.35 kWp modules and a total of 270 trackers. Well one thing is for sure, Solyndra’s recent bankruptcy filing cemented the removal of the words “solar energy” from President Obama’s speech to Congress last night where he laid out his American Jobs Act. That is, if it was in there in the first place. He didn’t even use the word “energy” in the speech although he did make mention of biofuels and fuel-efficient vehicles. My guess is that the word “semiconductor” in this statement was supposed to say solar panels. Tennessee Valley Authority reduces renewable energy project size cap to 50 kW for Generation Partners program

On September 6th, 2011 the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced that it will reduce maximum renewable energy project sizes under its Generation Partners pilot program from 200 kW to 50 kW after September 16th, 2011. The federally owned utility states that this step was necessary to ensure ongoing payment of incentives for smaller producers in future years. The action will not affect current program participant payments or incentive levels, which will continue through 2012. Read more
