Natcore, Rice University team makes progress on next-generation quantum-dot thin-film solar cells

Under the joint research agreement between Natcore Technology and Rice University, researchers, led by Professor Andrew Barron, announced that they had constructed two sets of multilayer quantum dot films: one with silicon (Si) quantum dots and the other with germanium (Ge) quantum dots. The team notes that both dot films have shown the ability to create a photo-generated current and that the thin-film solar cell advancement could eradicate the need for a silicon wafer subcell. One announcement that has been creating quite a buzz at this year?s EU PVSEC exhibition and conference is Konarka?s news that it is venturing down the BIPV route with its organic solar cells. Outlining the company?s strategy during a press conference at the show, company CEO, Director and co-founder Howard Berke stated that it was a natural move for the company, whose 1cm2 single-junction OPV cells have been verified by NREL as having 8.29% efficiency. On September 5th, 2011, SCHOTT Solar AG (Mainz, Germany) announced that it has developed a test for measuring the potentially induced degradation (PID) effect, and reports that the drop in performance in its glass-foil modules from this effect is less than 5%. SCHOTT states that as a result of this test, its modules can be considered PID resistant. On September 5th, 2011, Imec (Leuven, Belgium) announced a partnership with Solliance (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) to collaborate on thin film solar photovoltaic (PV) research and development (R&D). Solliance will utilize its facilities in Eindhoven as well as Imec's Leuven facilities to continue its work with the PV industry on thin-film silicon, alternatives for copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), and organic photovoltaics. On September 5th, 2011, E.ON AG (Düsseldorf, Germany) announced the construction of two new solar photovoltaic (PV) plants on the island of Sardinia, totaling 29.6 MW. The company's Fiume Santo 2 (FS2) and Fiume Santo 5 (FS5) plants will be the sixth and seventh PV plants developed by E.ON in the last 18 months. On September 5th, 2011, Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC, Sandvika, Norway) announced that its solar photovoltaic (PV) modules have achieved first place during the first six months of a year-long comparative power output study by Photon Magazine. On September 1st, 2011, Konica Minolta Sensing Americas Inc. (KMSA, Ramsey, New Jersey, U.S.) announced that it has made a program to provide access to advanced measurement equipment available to U.S.- based commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) companies, including those focused on research and development. On September 6th, 2011, First Solar Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, U.S.) announced that it will supply Reliance Power Ltd. (Navi Mumbai, India) with 100 MW of its cadmium telluride thin film PV modules for a project in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
