78 MW of the world?s largest solar photovoltaic plant connected to grid in Senftenberg, Germany

On September 24th, 2011 the Prime Minister of the German state of Brandenburg opened the 78 megawatt (MW) part of a PV plant completed by Berlin based project developer and EPC saferay GmbH on September 24. The ground based PV plant is designed for a total capacity of 148 MW. The plant is located on former open-pit mining areas close to the city of Senftenberg, Eastern Germany. Saferay?s 78 MW plant has been completed within just three months and generates power for about 25,000 households, the project developer emphasizes. On September 26th, 2011, Ontario's Local Assurance Bureau (LCAB) awarded CORE certification to Siliken Canada Corporation (Toronto, Canada). This certification affirms that solar photovoltaic (PV) modules produced at the company's Windsor, Ontario plant can be used to fulfill the domestic content requirement in the province's feed-in tariff. The CORE certification follows an on-site review of Siliken Canada's manufacturing practices, capacity, documentation and techniques. On September 27th, 2011, Oltmans Construction Company (Whitter, California, U.S.) announced that it has completed an 8.6 MW rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Southern California, as the largest rooftop PV plant in North America. The PV plant covers 11 hectares on the rooftop of a Prologis Inc. (San Francisco, California, U.S.) distribution center in Rialto, California. REC is considering the permanent closure of older production plants in Norway as wafer and cell prices continue to fall on the back of weak end-market demand. REC announced in May, 2011 that it would be suspending multicrystalline wafer production at its Herøya and Glomfjord plant as well as solar cell production at its Narvik, Norway facility. Continued downward pressure on prices had meant the plants were uneconomical to remain open. REC noted that a decision will be made on the permanent plant closures with the publication of the third quarter results on October 26th 2011. LDK Solar has installed a third polysilicon train at its Mahong manufacturing plant in Xinyu, China. This is the last 5,000MT train to be added to the site and takes the total capacity at Mahong to 15,000MT. Ramping up of the train will begin immediately and, aided by the experience of ramping up the previous two trains, LDK expects it to reach full capacity production towards the end of 2011. A comment from maxkilmachina recently drew my attention to an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences titled Valuation of plug-in vehicle life-cycle air emissions and oil displacement benefits. While it costs $10 to download the article and supporting documentation, I believe it's worthwhile for all serious energy storage and electric vehicle investors because the underlying study is the first comprehensive total cost of ownership analysis I've seen that includes both direct end-user costs and identifiable externalities like emissions, military and other indirect costs arising from oil consumption in the US.
