Q-Cells to restructure again after warning of losses of ?395.8 million in 1H2011

Despite a significant increase in sales in the second quarter of 2011, Q-Cells has warned that losses have reached ?395.8 million in the first half of the year, due to price declines, inventory write-offs and other one time issues. A major restructuring will be undertaken, including cutting manufacturing operations in Germany by 50%. Q-Cells guided full-year results would reach approximately ?1 billion but losses would be in the three-digit million euro range. Read more

centrotherm photovoltaics first half year sales up 54% at ?428.6 million

Strong demand for single equipment systems dominated revenue generation for centrotherm photovoltaics in the first-half of 2011. The major PV equipment supplier reported revenue of ?428.6 million, up 54% compared to the first-half of 2010, when sales reached ?278.3 million. Operating profits (EBIT) were up 57.2 % at ?53.2 million, while its Solar Cell & Module division accounted for the biggest share of revenue on the back of record figures, contributing about 89% of sales and generating an EBIT margin of 21.4 %. centrotherm photovoltaics, Thin Film segment continued making a loss. Photon Consulting: BOS now a majority of system costs for U.S residential sector

Photon Consulting LLC (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) has released a report examining balance of system costs for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, stating that BOS costs now represent 56-60% of total installer costs for a U.S. residential system. "The True Cost of Solar Power: The Pressure's On" notes that while module manufacturers have made considerable progress in reducing costs, non-module installer costs have not kept up. Read more

PV technology provider centrotherm photovoltaics reports a successful first half in 2011: Sales and earnings up

The technological strengths of centrotherm photovoltaics AG (Blaubeuren, Germany) have once again proven their worth in the first half of 2011, the company reports in a press release. In the first six months the supplier of equipment and technology to the photovoltaics (PV) sector increased its sales by 54.0 % to EUR 428.6 million (H1 2010: EUR 278.3 million). At the same time, consolidated operating profits (EBIT) were up 57.2 % at EUR 53.2 million (H1 2010: EUR 33.9 million). Read more

Saint-Gobain plans to buy Specialty Film unit from Bekaert

Saint-Gobain disclosed its plans to acquire the Solar Gard Specialty Films unit from Bekaert, which will be housed under Saint-Gobain?s Performance Plastics division. SunPower, First Solar, environmentalists reach agreement on 700 MW of PV projects

On August 9th, 2011, SunPower Corporation (San Jose, California, U.S.) and a subsidiary of First Solar Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, U.S.) announced that they have reached a settlement agreement with three environmental groups on two large solar photovoltaic (PV) plants under development in Central California. The agreement between Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Center for Biological Diversity and the solar companies should remove barriers to the development of the 250 MW California Valley Solar Ranch and the 550 MW Topaz Solar Farm. NY Governor signs Power NY Act

On August 4th, 2011 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an omnibus energy bill that includes a streamlined permitting process for power plants greater than 25 MW, and directs state agencies to study policy approaches to increase solar energy development. The Power NY Act will additionally create a new process for the siting of electricity generation facilities, as well as directing the state Department of Environmental Conservation to create emissions standards for carbon dioxide. PV producer aleo solar AG announces positive earnings for the year?s first half, lowers revenue forecast because of massively falling prices

aleo solar AG (Oldenburg/Prenzlau, Germany) on August 9th, 2011 announced that it generated revenue of EUR 232.0 million in the first six months of 2011. This means that aleo solar's revenue decreased by 16.2% compared with the first six months of 2010 (EUR 277.0 million). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) came in at EUR 3.4 million (EUR 29.3 million), and the EBIT margin was 1.5 percent (10.6 percent). Earnings per share amounted to EUR 0.13 (EUR 1.68); production volume rose to 161.6 megawatts (132.8 MW). Read more

Oskomera completes 12MW of large-scale projects in the UK

AEG to supply balance of systems equipment for Indian solar plants
