NREL receives three R&D 100 awards for PV technology collaborations

On June 22nd, 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL, Golden, Colorado, U.S.) announced that it has won three separate "R&D 100" awards from R&D Magazine for solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies. The awards were presented for collaborations to create silicon ink, a method of rapid PV cell assessment, and a new furnace for heating PV cells. In a presentation at the 37th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialist Conference (PVSC) in Seattle, Dr. Roger E. The weak demand for solar modules in the first-half of the year has also impacted the supply chain, as backsheet specialist, STR Holdings has lowered revenue guidance for its second-quarter financial period. According to STR module manufacturers have slowed build rates and reduced material purchase orders due to excess inventory and overcapacity. STR expects its solar segment sales to be in the region of US$68 - US$69 million, compared to previous guidance of between US$74 and US$78 million. On June 22nd, 2011, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) offered a conditional commitment for a USD 1.4 billion loan guarantee for a project to build 733 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants on industrial buildings. Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S.), Prologis Inc. (Denver, Colorado, U.S.) and NRG Energy Inc. (Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.) will launch Project Amp, which aims to build PV plants on roughly 750 rooftops across the United States. On June 23rd, 2011, Satcon Technology Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) announced that it has been selected by BIOSAR Energy SA (Kifissia, Greece) to supply inverters for 20 MW of utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants. Florida Power and Light Company (FPL, Juno Beach, Florida, U.S.) has announced that a new pilot program for solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar water heating rebates will begin on June 29th, 2011. The program was originally scheduled to open on June 21st, 2011, however a problem on the FPL website prevented the submission of applications. U.S. Supreme Court confirms EPA regulation of carbon emissions

On June 20th, 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an 8-0 decision that re-affirms the role of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act. In "Connecticut v. American Electric Power", the court ruled that a group of U.S. states, cities and a land trust could not bring a lawsuit over carbon emissions directly against five large utilities, as such regulation is the EPA's jurisdiction.
