U.S. Department of Energy awards 3M USD 4.4 Million to reduce cost of photovoltaic energy systems

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded 3M (St. Paul, Minn.) USD 4.4 million as part of DOE?s SunShot Initiative. SunShot aims to reduce the total costs of photovoltaic (PV) solar energy systems by about 75 percent, so that they are cost-competitive with other forms of energy without subsidies. SunShot calls for achieving this goal by the end of the decade. The sum of the 3M award is estimated at USD 4.4 million over three years. Read more

Yingli becomes sole PV module supplier to GRID Alternatives

On March 21st, 2011, Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Ltd. (Baoding, China) announced that its U.S. subsidiary has formed a strategic partnership with GRID Alternatives (Oakland, California, U.S.). Under the agreement, Yingli will provide the largest donation in GRID Alternative's history, comprised of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, and become the sole PV module supplier for the non-profit organization. First Sanyo HIT installation complete

PV production technology: Natcore sells its first wet-process AR coating station to Hunan TLNZ

On March 21st, 2011, Natcore Technology Inc. (Red Bank, New Jersey, U.S.) announced that it has signed a letter of understanding to sell its first wet-process anti-reflective (AR) coating processing station to Hunan TLNZ Solar Technology Company Ltd. (Xiangtan, China). The station uses a liquid phase deposition process developed at Rice University (Houston, Texas) to replace chemical vapor deposition in the production of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells, and it being designed in a modular fashion. Order Focus: Spire signs deal to supply 20MW PV module line to Tecnometal Equipamentos of Brazil

Spire recently released that it will be delivering a 20MW solar PV module line to Tecnometal Equipamentos of San Paulo, Brazil. Details involving delivery date and pricing from the deal were not disclosed. This is the third supply deal Spire has signed in the last few weeks. In mid-February, Spire won a 20MW turnkey module line deal with Bangladesh firm Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy, which was followed by 50MW automated PV module line deal with Mage Solar earlier this month. Official 2010 PV installation figures for Germany show a booming market with almost 7.4GW installed, an increase of 75% compared to 2009. Once again Germany was by far, the largest PV market last year. However, for the market to prosper in 2011, against a backdrop of lower feed-in tariffs, prices much drop fast, according to Henning Wicht, PV analyst at IHS iSuppli in a presentation at the SEMI PV Fab Managers Forum, held in Berlin, Germany earlier this week. Paul Basore is appointed director of HSA?s advanced R&D centre

United Solar earns U.S. patent for nanocrystalline silicon thin-film deposition technology

Subhendu Guha, Jeff Yang and Baojie Yan of thin-film solar module manufacturer United Solar, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, have been granted U.S. Patent 7,902,049 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for their ?method of depositing high-quality microcrystalline semiconductor materials.? The patent was granted to the company just a few months after it announced that the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory had conducted testing resulting in a 12% initial conversion of the nanocrystalline technology. Energy industry prognosticators saw US adoption as almost inevitable just two years ago following the election of President Obama.
