Suntech COO to step-down in January

Former head of European operations at Suntech, David Hogg will resign from the company, effective January 21, 2012 for personal reasons, according to a very brief statement, filed with the SEC in the US. Hogg had been Suntech?s chief operating officer since 2010. Read more

Fidelis to supply TinSol with additional 42 MW of PV modules, closes on final USD 12 million tranche of funding

On December 19th, 2011 Fidelis Energy Inc. (Los Angeles, California, U.S.) announced that it has entered into a long-term agreement under which Fidelis will supply 42 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules to a subsidiary of TinSol Energy (pty) Ltd. (TSEL, Johannesburg, South Africa). Three days later on December 22nd, 2011, Fidelis announced that it has closed on the final tranche of USD 12 million in funding from Empres Voss Capital (EVC), which will conclude USD 30 million in non-convertible debt financing with EVC. Indian MNRE announces incentives for first 100 MW of grid-tied solar, calls for net metering

On December 19th, 2011 India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) has introduced generation-based incentives (GBI) for the first 100 MW of grid-connected solar photovoltaics (PV) commissioned in the nation. A day later on December 20th, MNRE Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah called for the preparation of an action plan for introducing net metering for commercial and residential rooftop PV plants, as part of a national consultation on the subject. Activ Solar completes Phase IV of Perovo Solar Power Station

Activ Solar has completed Phase IV of its Perovo Solar Power Station, adding a further 20MW to the system?s size. Perovo?s total capacity now stands at 80MW and with ramping up still ongoing ? Paul Peng appointed president of AUO

AU Optronics (AUO) has appointed Paul Peng as its new president. Peng will start his new role on January 1, 2012 and is replacing Dr. L. J. Chen, who will now serve as AUO?s president of solar business operation. JA Solar reaches 18.5% efficiency with multi-crystalline Maple PV cells

On December 20th, 2011 JA Solar Holdings Company Ltd. (Shanghai, China) announced that that it has reached 18.5% efficiency in large volume production with its multi-crystalline Maple solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. JA Solar notes that it has reached an 18%, average conversion efficiency, which is a new record for the company, as well as being significantly higher than the industry standard conversion efficiency of multi-crystalline PV cells at 16.8%. Solarhybrid expands capacity of FinowTower to 84.7 MW; Acquisition of 1.75 GW of Solar Millennium projects to be delayed until the first quarter of 2012

On December 21st, 2011 Solarhybrid AG (Brilon, Germany) announced that it has expanded the capacity of its FinowTower II solar photovoltaic (PV) plant to 84.7 MW, making it the largest PV plant in Europe. The company notes that the completion of this plant and progress on another 18.5 MW PV plant bring its cumulative 2011 installed capacity to 218 MW at 11 PV plants. A day later on December 22nd, 2011, the company announced that it will acquire only 1.75 GW of projects from Solar Millennium (Erlangen, Germany), instead of the 2.25 GW previously planned, and will delay this acquisition until the first quarter of 2012. U.K. DECC to appeal U.K. High Court ruling on solar PV FIT cuts

On December 21st, 2011 U.K. Climate Change Minister Greg Barker stated that the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) "disagrees" with the U.K. High Court ruling on the timing of feed-in tariff (FIT) cuts, and will appeal the decision. The U.K. High Court ruled on December 21st, 2011 that the DECC's cuts to the feed-in tariff for solar photovoltaic (PV) generation eleven days before the closure of the official consultation on the plans was illegal. The court has required that the government provide more money for feed-in tariffs, as well as supporting PV projects in schools and social housing. Read more

T-Solar Group borrows USD 145 million to finance two PV plants in Peru totaling 44 MW

On December 22nd, 2011 the T-Solar Group (Madrid, Spain) announced that it has signed USD 145 million in three loan agreements to finance two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Peru, with a combined capacity of 44 MW. The two plants will cover 206 hectares of land in the nation's Arequipa region. If commissioned by the second semester of 2012 as planned these will be the largest PV plants in Latin America. Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy urges SolarWorld to withdraw PV trade petition

On December 20th, 2011 the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy (CASE) sent a letter to SolarWorld Industries Americas Inc. (Hillsboro, Oregon, U.S.) urging it to withdraw the petition it filed to the U.S. International Trade Commission and Department of Commerce. CASE states that if the petition leads to high tariffs on solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules it will cause great damage to the U.S. solar industry, and that the trade case could also lead to a trade war with China. DNV and KEMA combine forces to create ?world-leading? certification company

DNV has acquired 74.3% of KEMA?s shares which it claims will create a world-leading consulting and certification company. While DNV becomes the majority shareholder with a 74.3% share, Alliander retains its holding (25.4%) as does Cogas (0.3%). The transaction is subject to the approval of the US, Dutch and German competition authorities. Read more

PV installations plummet by 97 percent post FiT cut

The Department for Energy and Climate Change has revealed that from December 12-18, a measly 812 systems were installed. The figure is down by 97 percent from last week’s incredible installation figures that saw 125.93MW of capacity installed, as installers rushed to beat the December 12 deadline. Read more
